USB 4G LTE Novatel U679

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! I just got a USB 4G LTE Novatel U679 and have been trying to set it up with my pineapple, I have my settings as follows:

network.wan2=interface
network.wan2.ifname=ppp0
network.wan2.proto=3g
network.wan2.service=umts
network.wan2.device=/dev/ttyUSB0
network.wan2.apn=inet.bell.ca
network.wan2.username=
network.wan2.password=
network.wan2.defaultroute=1
network.wan2.ppp_redial=persist
network.wan2.peerdns=1
network.wan2.dns=8.8.8.8
network.wan2.keepalive=1
network.wan2.pppd_options=debug

And this is not working. The odd thing is that when I first plug it into my pineapple the led ON THE STICK flashes for 10-20 seconds, then just goes out. whereas when it is plugged into my computer (even if not connected to a network) it is always on.

Also I have tried nearly every "service" to no success, could it be that the stick is 4g and the "protocol" is 3g?

I know this isn't a "supported" device. But I would appreciate any help you guys can give me :)

Could also be a power issue. MK5 puts out 0.5A on the usb port. If your 4G stick draws more it will fail. Dont use battery power on the MK5 while testing and possibly try it with a powered usb hub.. (Just make shure the hub doesnt backfeed power to the MK5)

And Smarty I'm not using battery power, it's right into the wall. But I don't think it's a power issue as the LED on the stick blinks for a couple seconds (The exact same every time) then goes out.

I understand.. Yet i had the exact same issue with an Huawei LTE dongle.. Didn't boot the dongle and didn't dial in. Used a USB port meter and all the leds turned off when it peaked at 0.76a. Power-usage when dialed in (on a laptop ) was just 0.4. Just once during the boot / initialization of the dongle it peaked at a level the MK5 couldn't provide. Resulted in a not working dongle.

Not saying thats the case with you.. just something to keep in mind when troubleshooting your issue.

As for your output:

[ 10.940000] scsi 0:0:0:0: CD-ROM NVTL Mass Storage 2.31 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2

I'd say your device is not modeswitching. Could your post the output of LSUSB ?

If you have the Vendor and Product id from LSUSB google to what it should switch and try somehing like :

usb_modeswitch -v 12d1 -p 1506 -c /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/12d1\:14fe Replace the vendor and product id to match your needs.

cdc_ether 1-1.2:1.6: eth1: register 'cdc_ether' at usb-ehci-platform-1.2, CDC Ethernet Device, 00:a0:c6:00:00:00

Your modem is up as eth1. You just need to static an IP and setup iptables forwarding. Search the forums for the other similar model Novatel modems.

Thanks Darren!

Its weird though because the LED on the modem is off.

I'll try it out and see what happens.

Used this setup https://forums.hak5.org/index.php?/topic/32785-usb-tether-to-novatel-5510l/?hl=novatel

Where 100.71.42.* is the range (Got that by plugging it into my work computer and doing ipconfig)

10.1.1.* is my pineapples subnet

Ran,

ifconfig eth1 100.71.42.84 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
route del default
route add default gw 100.71.42.1 eth1
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 10.1.1.0/24 -o eth1 -j MASQUERADE
iptables -A FORWARD -s 10.1.1.0/24 -o eth1 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A FORWARD -d 10.1.1.0/24 -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -i eth1 -j ACCEPT

Tried it and got nothing, did a reboot

tried it, and got nothing.

It just hangs at

"

PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8): 56 data bytes
"
It never times out, which is strange...
EDIT: At the end of dmesg I am now getting

[ 79.540000] EXT4-fs (sda1): couldn't mount as ext3 due to feature incompatibilities
[ 79.550000] EXT4-fs (sda1): couldn't mount as ext2 due to feature incompatibilities
[ 79.580000] EXT4-fs (sda1): warning: mounting fs with errors, running e2fsck is recommended
[ 79.590000] EXT4-fs (sda1): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
[ 80.510000] Adding 1002256k swap on /dev/sda2. Priority:-1 extents:1 across:1002256k
[ 96.090000] cdc_ether 1-1.2:1.6: eth1: CDC: unexpected notification 01!

EDIT2: (Sorry for editing so much, last time.)
On my arch box dmesg also gives
"469.721897 cdc_ether 1-1:1.6 enp0s16blah CDC: unexpected notification 01!"

Plug the modem into a regular computer and dial-up as usual. Check ip configuration and see what range it's on. For example when Mubix was here recently recording Metasploit Minute I helped him get a similar Verizon LTE dongle from Novatel online. It was running as 192.168.1.1 and had a little webserver going where you had to browse to and check a box for auto connect. It was a one time configuration. After that it's simply a matter of doing what you've stated above.

It throws me into "100.71.42.*" I did a nmap scan and a netscan and was unable to find any web servers (also tried local IP).

When I plug in the USB it opens up as storage, forces you to install the bloatware which when you click "connect" it comes up as a new device in the network connections list and works.

There's nothing else I am able to find...

Am I going to be better off to just buy a 4G LTE dongle thats supported? :unsure: :wacko: :dry:

If so which one for a canadian carrier would you recommend?
