d1sc1ple01
Well, I haven't browsed enough to know if there is an introduction forum, but I'll go ahead and say hello here in my first post. My name is John, but I go by d1sc1ple01, obviously. I am a pretty big CS fan, and I'm getting into a decent amount of programming. I had a course on python, then c++, and now I'm teaching myself php and html5 on the side. However, like most people, hacking has always been super intriguing to me. My buddy showed me how to crack some windows passwords with bt5r3 and then we both learned how to crack wep and wpa2 wifi together. Since then, i've wanted to do more but havent had the resources. For xmas, I bought a pineapple mark iv and the reaver bundle with the alfa wifi adapter. I am of the opinion that: "the only stupid question is one you don't google first." So, I have been googling and researching a lot but these questions either can't be found or are better suited for a personal response. tl;dr - Hey! I'm new! Here's some questions: 1. Do you have any advice for how to learn any of the following more quickly than just googling and reading? an understanding of linux, a broad understanding of the tools in backtrack, how to utilize the pineapple 2. I only recently became interested in these topics, so I haven't seen many hak5 episodes. Is there a list of hak5 episodes that contain information and/or tutorials about uses for the pineapple and/or a usb wifi/adapter? 3. Do you have any general advice in regards to this field of study? 4. What other forums should I be on? Thanks for any and all information. Mr-Protocol
Well, I haven't browsed enough to know if there is an introduction forum, but I'll go ahead and say hello here in my first post. Do you have any advice for how to learn any of the following more quickly than just googling and reading? an understanding of linux, a broad understanding of the tools in backtrack, how to utilize the pineapple http://nixsrv.com/llthw - Learn Linux the Hard Way http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_page - man pages :) http://revision3.com/haktip/episodes http://www.backtrack-linux.org/ http://www.offensive...ashed/Main_Page - Metasploit Unleashed http://cloud.wifipin...e.com/index.php - Wifi Pineapple Wiki Forum is a great resource for the pineapple, if not the best. 2. I only recently became interested in these topics, so I haven't seen many hak5 episodes. Is there a list of hak5 episodes that contain information and/or tutorials about uses for the pineapple and/or a usb wifi/adapter? http://hak5.org/category/episodes http://revision3.com/hak5/episodes http://revision3.com/haktip/episodes If you basically Google "Hak5 *TOPIC*" that usually gets the job done. 3. Do you have any general advice in regards to this field of study? I started with basic computer maintenance and networking, evolved into computer forensics and data recovery in regards to college courses. I also was doing pen-testing type material on my own time. I also taught myself programming early on, back in VB6 days, VB.net, Python, C/C++, Netlinx (AMX Proprietary language), I'm sure there is more I can't remember. Programming knowledge is a great tool to have. http://pen-testing.sans.org/blog/ http://www.sans.org/ Lots of various books on subjects. 4. What other forums should I be on? I think you would be hard-pressed to find another forum that is more "white hat" than noobs out to deface sites and "hack" games or something. Backtrack forums are pretty good about keeping the bad stuff out last I remember (before the move). Thanks for any and all information. Infiltrator
Mr-Protocol was pretty much spot on with his answers. I'd just like to add one thing, try learning a bit more about networking in general, a lot of new people that comes into this field, has very limited knowledge of network, and they don't know how important it really is. CCNA and Network+ are very good courses and I highly recommend them. Another thing I would suggest to you, is to learn a Linux distro such as CentOS or MintOS. You will find that, most of the tools used in this field are Linux based, so learning a Linux OS is of a big advantage for you. And last, but not least here are some useful resources that you can use to learn more, securitytube.net and irongeek.com.
d1sc1ple01
Wow guys. Thank you all so much. I've been knee deep in it since you all posted your responses. I'm currently watching a video on metasploit by vivek on securitytube. I plan on learning linux the hard way when i get bored of these videos :P once again, thanks guys. Pwnd2Pwnr
Make the learning enjoyable and awarding for yourself... it will get easier everyday. I have been busting my hump on Linux for a little over a year and have learned so much more by trying to maintain a 'command line' only approach. Good luck on your endeavors... d1sc1ple01
Your all's kindness has literally blown my mind. In every other avenue where I have looked for help everyone is like shut up noob, read the stickies and search for things online. I HAVE done that, and it's overwhelming trying to decide where to start because I'd rather not spend 20 hours of my life learning some small part of security or some small part of linux that i'll only use once. /rant Thank all of you all for your support and encouragement! That is why Hak5 is the best! :D ! Anywhoo, your time with Linux will introduce you to an entire world of command line terminals. That said, I have been a Windows user since DOS was the "best of the best". I was using Punters through AIM (essentially DoS). Until recently, I had no reason for Linux (I thought). But, seeing this finely tuned OS, that is FREE, made me realize that Open Source is where it's at. The community at Hak5 has been more then helpful with me making my transition into the rabbit hole. I know how to chmod, tar xvzf, ls | grep, and a bunch more I can't think of... yet there is a bunch more I do not know. It won't be a quick transition and Google will become your University. Eventually, you will probably just let Windoze collect dust on your hard drive. Good Luck! Edited December 28, 2012 by Pwnd2Pwnr

Mr-Protocol
Great post guys. Mr-Protocol, I am enjoying this site! http://nixsrv.com/llthw - Learn Linux the Hard Way I recently found it via Slashdot.org article. I haven't had much time to play with it, but it looks pretty good for a beginner's intro to Linux.
Infiltrator
If you can, I would suggest downloading the CompTia Linux+ videos via torrents. These are great videos, if you are new to the Linux world, I've been using Linux for sometime now, but have found them quite good.
