poukram
Hi, here is my problem : I am trying to scan hosts with the "MAC address scaner" of Cain&Abel. I know hosts exist and are connected to my network, but the software doesn't find them. I had the same problem with Ethereal or Ettercap, easily solved by working in NON-promiscuous mode. But Cain&Abel runs in promiscuous mode, and I can't find the way to switch into the NON-prom. mode ! I tought the pb could come from WinPcap, so I've tried to uninstall it, but Cain&Abel refuses to run without it. Is there a way to solve my pb ? Thks ! PoyBoy
Are you looking for wired connections while you are on wireless, or vice versa? Are the other clients on different lans (192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1, etc) Or even different switches? If so, this will cause your problem
poukram
I am using a router via a wireless connection, and i am looking for others laptops connected to the router via wireless connection. Everybody has the same lan (192.168.0.xx).
PoyBoy
Everyone can connect and use the internet/whatever? If so, have you tried nmap? That should pick it up. Are you using a seperate wireless card? That could be the problem
poukram
Thks for answering. Yes, I have tried with nmap, and it works. But I'd like to do it with Cain&Abel, since it's a more powerfull soft. What do you call "separate wireless card" ? I am using the wireless card of my laptop... DTYtsejam24
I had this problem too. Its because cain doesnt work with all wireless cards. Theres not really much you could do other than get a different wireless card or get a different app to do what your trying to do. nmap is definitely the best alternative if you just wanna scan the network for hosts but seeing as your wanting to use the rest of cains features nmap probably wont meet your needs

VaKo
Question: Does Cain see your network card? Have you got firewalls on the other PC's? I've noticed that some firewalls block cain's sniffing.
poukram
Yes, Cain sees my card. The others PC may have firewall, I don't know, but it's maybe the pb. I haven't tought to it. Thks.
barrytone
Given that I'm having the same problem, I'll just hijack this topic to ask a question... What would be a good program to perform an arp cache poisoning attack / man in the middle attack under windows xp? Preferably one that lets me specify the mac addresses of the targets manually. For once I intend to try things on my own network :P

barrytone
goo-/restrains myself Oh for goodness sake. I've googled. I'm asking for a recommendation based on experience. Perhaps I should have specified that.

There are others, Ettercap is the only one I know about. Seems to work nicely, but its not as newbie friendly as c&a. Hope this helps. The mac scan never returns anything with my wireless adaptor. Wired works fine. WinPcap is fine. Nmap works great (and will find mac addresses), as does ethereal / wireshark. I've got a pretty new laptop, and it's got an express card slot instead of PCMCIA, so I've not got the wide choice of wireless cards that most others do. Cain would be fine if it would let me specify the mac addresses for the MiTM attack manually
