Bad Luck With Powered Hubs

Recommended Posts

I seem to be running into problems with usb hubs. I am looking for a good powered hub for the pineapple. I have tried 2 different powered hubs with little luck.

I have tried the powered hub from the hak shop and after the power feed back issue I decided not to use it and I went out and bought a Belkin F4U038-APL 4 port powered hub and I am dropping my USB connection after a short time when using the AWUS036NHA.

I know this sounds like a pretty simple question that a google search could answer but rather then wasting more time and money with trial and error I thought I would come here and ask what others are using.

Thank You

lostngone,

Thank you for posting this.... I have seen other threads specifying known working hubs am currently looking to buy a powered hub and an additional Hi output battery. I will be following this thread and hopefully, we can get some good recommendations out of your post

Thx

Take the one from the hak shop and cut the red wire on the connection going to the pineapple.

Is there a tutorial on how to do that... I'm kinda bummed because I just bought the powered USB hub from the Hakshop and it is backfeeding power to the pineapple.

I'm kind of curious if anyone has fed power to it via the barrel cable and plugged the powered hub in. Did it fry someones pineapple? I've read through a few post on the subject but didn't see that anywhere. Just advice not to do it...

I will cut the wire today and post pics and if it works tonight.

At first I thought I just might have a bad USB hub maybe something like a shorted diode however this is NOT the case. Both positive leads and both negative leads inside the black USB data connector and red USB power connector are soldered to their respective pads on the board. I am also interested in seeing what would happen if you powered a pineapple from the USB port and DIN connector at the same time... Anyone wanna try it? :(

As far as thesugarat's question. As I mentioned on the host side of the hub you will see two red wires connecting to one point on the board and two black wires connected to another point on the board.

What you want to do is find red wire that runs to the black USB connector and cut that wire. In the picture I have circled the wire I cut.

Productive evening. I replaced the IPX to RP-SMA cable in my pineapple and cut the red cord in the USB hub from the Hak5 shop. It worked perfectly but I now have another problem. If I run everything from the battery pack it works well. But if I run it from the power supply how do I supply power to the red USB cord. I thought maybe the power coming through the data cable might be looped into powering the red cable. It's in the photo. Think that will work? I'm afraid to plug it in.

You do not want to loop the red power cable like that...

You need to plug the red plug into a power source as well as the USB to DIN/barrel pineapple power cable into a power source as well.

What I did is cut up two USB A female to A male cables and wired only the red and black wires together to make a Y-cable for power only. Just make sure the source has enough power/current to supply everything you plug in.

Anybody else have the issue where the powered hub from the Hak shop stops seeing the USB modules after about 45 minutes? It reads everthing well enough after you first boot up... But after a while it doesn't. If it works fine for you, are you actively running logs onto the USB or maybe a cron job that's causing it to keep alive?

Sorry I can't speak to the hakshops model, as they didn't offer it when I decided to buy one. Just a little chime in here with the fact that I can confirm the Belken F5U404PBLK works awesome for hours on end with a Super Talent Pico usb and a AWUS036NHA (from the hakshop of course) with no backfeed stock. I also use it on my raspberry pi and it works well and doesn't backfeed that either. petertfm recommended it to me and it hasn't failed me once.

So yeah, if you have an extra 13 bucks laying around, have at it.

The Belken F5U404PBLK doesn't appear to be a powered hub so there would not be a feedback issue. The only reason I wanted a powered hub was to help power a bigger USB drive, 8Gig, that works when using the power adapter on the pineapple but not when using my battery pack. I may give it a shot though...

Yes, it is powered and it is the one I use with no problems whatsoever.

The P in F50404PBLK is powered. I've used it with wifi + usb for days on end.

have you powered the hub with a battery pack? did you have to make your own cable to get from usb to barrel connector?

i'm considering getting the F5U404PBLK with an anker astro2 8400mah

Yes, I power it from a battery pack all the time. It came with the correct usb cable.

I haven't, but it should be pretty simple. Chop off the ac adapter, pin it out with a voltmeter to make sure which is postive, solder +/- to the red/black of a usb cable to plug into the battery. 8400mah should be good for a couple of hours of pineapple + wifi or 3g goodness.

I found my happy spot using an Anker 10000mAh MultiVoltage battery (http://www.amazon.co...duct/B005NGKR54) and setup as follows:

- Battery, set to 12v, use barrel connector w/DC output.

- HakShop powered hub into the MKIV (red powered part not connected to anything)

- SanDisk 4GB plugged into one of the USB ports on the USB hub

- Alfa WiFi (from HakShop) plugged into the miniUSB on the USB hub

This works reliably for me, and gives me hours and hours of power for all devices, which are powered directly through the MKIV via the Anker battery. I'm not using the "powered" part of the HakShop powered USB hub, just using it on whole as a passive hub. I never plug the red plug into anything.

Everything stays nice and cool, and it runs perfectly. I can fire up the external Alfa at will via the interfaces on the MKIV depending on what I'm doing. the MKIV sees all the devices correctly on boot/reboot.

For not backpowering the pineapple it should be possible to put a diode into the cutted connection.

But there is a loss in current about 0.2 to 0.5 depending on the type of the diode. With the diode the hub is powered from the pineapple, when no battery is connected.

Did anybody try this?
