WiFi Manager

Recommended Posts

Ok, I did the upgrade like the instructions said and I cannot get into the UI. I have tried the new url and the old one with both IE and Firefox. Power, WLAN and USB lights are lit up steady. The pineapple ed:1a SSID is broadcasting. The upgrade installed with the animated fruit, then it restarted and never came back up. I attributed that to the URL changing. I read the change logs which basically say what was changed. Where do I find the release notes? Now I'm scared.

Sorry for being such a noob.........

LOL, sorry for the freak out. The update worked perfectly. The problem I had was entering in: http://172.42.16.1:1471 which was typed above where the actual URL is http://172.16.42.1:1471 I just noticed it when looking in my address bar and seeing the old URL in there. I thought, "it can't be that easy", but it was. My MKIV

Again, sorry for being such a noob but this stuff is awesome......

Thanks for your quick suggestion and help.

Hm it seems that MAC changing mess up a little bit if you reboot the pineapple <_< When you reboot, the interface has its initial MAC address BUT the wireless config has the random one which was set before the reboot.

I have a to figure out how to fix that

Just wait for the next firmware release ;) Will have an "API" for it.

Hey guys, a wierd little aside: I had a hard time logging into the Pineapple, it kept saying Unavailabe. Then, I removed my thumbdrive (probably a bad term now that they are so small, maybe thumbnail drive is better....), rebooted without the USB drive in place, and boom, the login came right up. After logging in, I reinserted the USB drive and no worries.

BTW, I have pretty much all of the Pineapple store infusions installed to my USB drive.

Thought I'd mention this just in case anyone else has the same problem.

Thanks for all of your support. Having BIG fun with this thing......

Great Stuff WM, I'm happy to see the new Mac changer installment, Thank you! YOU DA man!

After testing with the new Mac changing option Ive noticed every thing seemed to be okay, However, when I went to connect to the AP. I was unable to obtain an ip, and therefor was unable to connect. I rebooted the pineapple to try again, but I got the same result,

I ended up having to do a re-flash.

Also since were on topic, Would it be possible for the future to come to have a manual mac changing option as opposed to random,(or maybe both options) The intent would be to spoof the mac AP address that your trying to pose as.

Correct me if im wrong, When Windows 7 see's the AP, it connects automatically, however since its a new Mac Address it creates a new setting for your network security settings. The Home,Public and Office splash screen will appear making it an obvious. plus the network AP will appear with a '2' beside the name, making "linksys2"

I don't know if by spoofing the mac address will correct this and make it more elite!!!! but if it did, that would be cool!

Hi, i seem to be having a bit of trouble connecting to my wifi. i'm using the pineapple with the alpha wifi from the hakshop and running it off the pineapple juice battery pack (i figure if it doesn't work on the battery pack there isn't much use in the field). using this network manager i can bring up the alpha (light comes on, it can see wifi APs around) but when i click DHCP Request it doesn't connect. the AP i'm trying to access is WPA personal with TKIP, i have the correct password and mode set to client as per the guide earlier in this thread. but it does not connect at all. connecting to the pineapple via the PoE LAN port, but that shouldn't make a difference. is there something I am missing? or could it be that there isn't enough power to run the alpha?

either way Whistle Master, you have clearly put a lot of work into the pineapple and your effort is very well appreciated :)

thanks for the tip. However the led stays on with no change when trying to connect. regardless of if it's running off of battery power or AC. I tried reflashing 2.7.0 to no avail. looks like i'll be tethering to my laptop only :(

Hmm also make sure the nha works on Windows? I have had an issue where the antenna on a pineapple was no good, could only connect within 4 feet. Try a different usb cord as well

Yeah i've already tried that (at first i thought it was dead but after finding the right drivers it works and connects fine). i should have thought about trying a different usb cable, but the only difference is that when i click commit after saving the settings the wlan1 is disabled and doesnt bring itself back up. enabling it and clicking DHCP request still does nothing.

I appreciate your help and patience none the less

@Tommy- I was having the same problem w/ setup. Not being a PHP guy I jumped into command line and have everything working from there so I know it will do it. This is where I'm at now. When I have time this weekend I'll dive into the PHP and try to see exactly whats going on and why it's not working for me through the net manager. I spent the better part of a week trying to get the manager to work w/ no luck before I decided to jump down to CL. I just bought this pineapple thing a few days ago so it's probably all my GUI ignorance and nothing wrong w/ any coding! ;) Try some CL love to see if the problem is w/ the card or the GUI interface.

Alright guys, I'm just posting instructions in case anybody else is having trouble figuring out the UI...

First of all, download Network Manager (you might need to ics from your computer at this point in order to get internet)
Download to internal or external storage.

Once Network manager is install, open it up and click "Auto-Detect" under the wireless tab...

At this point, you should see your usb wifi dongle pop up.
(note: if your device doesn't show up, you might want to try again or make sure your dongle is compatible with the pineapple. You might need to install your wifi driver from opkg)

Once you see your devices below.... enter in the apropriate information for your wifi network... If your trying to connect to a network, be sure to set as "client" under wlan1. Be sure to leave radio0 wlan0 alone, your only working with radio1 wlan1 here.

Enter your network info in appropriately.
Example:

http://www.flickr.co...N08/7916346916/

After you type in all your info... scroll to the top of the page and click "save"

Once you save, click "Commit"
(Note: If it loads longer than usual, just refresh the page. It should be done.)

Once you click Commit, your screen should look like this at the top.
(Picture)

http://www.flickr.co.../in/photostream

Now click "DHCP Request"
Your screen should look like this now:
(picture)

http://www.flickr.co...N08/7916346720/

(again, refresh the page if it takes longer than usual)

Now that you are connected to the internet, it's time to setup Internet connection Sharing.

Click on the ICS tab.

Change the settings to share internet from wlan1 to wlan0.
(it should look like this)

http://www.flickr.co.../in/photostream

Click Save

That's it! now your done. try to connect to the internet and it should work. :D

I think I screwed up my Network Manager...

Pineapple Hardware Version: MK IV

Pineapple Software Version: 2.7.0 (factory installed)

OS used to connect to the pineapple: Windows 7

Network layout of how your setup is connected (including IP information): Pineapple to Alpha. Couldn't see an option for DHCP for Alpha though.

All the tools/options that are running on the pineapple when the issue happened: At the time I was attempting WiFi Relay. Pineapple hooked into a USB hub (not powered, but Pineapple plugged into the wall outlet, so I'm getting enough power). In one port I had my 16gb flash drive (similar to hakshop one), and in the other port I had my Alpha b/g AWUS036H. Only thing running was wireless wlan0 and I brought up wlan1 fine. KARMA was off, DNSSpoof was off, etc... all off.

Ping results from computer to pineapple: I was connected to the WUI through my android and was able to SSH into the Pineapple through my android at the time. No internet access though, as my Alpha wouldn't connect.

Is the problem repeatable (Yes/No): Yes

Steps taken which created the problem:

1) Booted up Pineapple, then logged into WUI via my android phone.
2) Wireless wlan0 was up, everything else was off, so I plugged in my Alpha to the hub (everything being powered by the wall plug).
3) Went to Network Manager. Saw "Radio0 wlan0" was enabled. "Radio1 -" had nothing by it yet. I also took note that "Physical Interface Radio0 [wlan0] - HWAddr [mac address] group box was also visible and listed all the information (Enable, Type, Mode, Wiereless Network, Channel, etc etc), as it should.
4) I clicked "Auto-Detect" and located my Alpha, on wlan1. A group box "Physical Interface Radio1..." also came up.
5) I set wlan0 to Access Point and wlan1 to AP and filled in my network information (my test network is open). Channel was set to auto. Note: I followed Newworld's instructions in post #90 for this process.
6) I clicked "Save". It saved just fine
7) I clicked "Commit" and it hung on "Loading..." so I refreshed after a few minutes. That's when my Alpha went down. The Alpha was disabled at that point (again, I had my Pineapple plugged into the wall outlet, an unpowered hub into the pineapple's usb port, and the Alpha and SD card in the hub).
8) I brought wlan1 back up and went through the process again, but received the same results. Here is where I got lost :)
9) Now wlan1 changed to wlan2, then wlan3 for each time I attempted to bring up the Alpha and connect to my AP. Now, in the Physical Interface Radio 1... group box, I saw "Remove Config". I clicked that and it removed the group box for Radio1 wlan1(or as it was then, wlan3). I thought this woudl allow me to start 'fresh' with my attempts to use the pineapple in "relay" mode. Well... I must have done something becuase that didn't work out so well ;). Where the Network Manager box was on the WUI, where it says "radio0 wlan0 enabled" and "radio1 wlan1 disabled". All of that output disappeared and everything associated with the wlan0 and wlan1 group config boxes on the WUI were gone.
10) I pouted a bit here.. which had no effect on the pineapple.
11) Right now, my "Network Manager" box says "Physical Interfaces" but lists nothing now. "Logical Interfaces" only lists wlan0 and gives me the option to enable/disable. Under the wireless tab, where the aforementioned group boxes were listed, absolutely nothing is displayed. Only [Auto-Detect] [save] [Commit] [Revert].
12) Panic.
13) I decided to do a factory reset at this point. I went to the Advanced tab and clicked factory reset, then rebooted. Nothing though. Everything is exactly the same. I then held the button down for 7 seconds... then 10 seconds... then 30 seconds... I don't believe my Pineapple is resetting. I have the same persistant SSID and password.. and unfortunately, the same problem
14) I also tried to uninstall / install Network manager a few times (also cleared cache in Advanced page, forgot to mention that).
14) Turned to the experts.

Anything else that was attempted to 'fix' the problem: I've been looking through php files and other files to see if I can catch something, but I haven't changed or edited anything.

Any help getting this resolved would be greatly appreciated. I just got this in the mail a few days ago so I'm not too familiar with it yet. I read the book and searched the forums, but nothing, at least from my understanding, seemed to fit this problem. If I missed it, please point me in the right direction.

I'd like to get everything in the Network manager back to the way it was, pre eff-up. Then I'll concentrate on getting the Alpha to do WiFi Relay. :)

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Here is a screencap of what it looks like now.

EDIT #2: Intersting... I have my pineapple connected to my pc via ehternet and have internet access (through the pc). I enabled wlan0 and attempted to. start Karma but it doesn't start. Karma is not functioning at all after my Network Manager error. Something is wrong with phy0? I also can't start/stop wireless from the Status tab.. only the Network Manager (via disable). I'm still not sure why the Reset button on the bottom of the unit isn't working. I'm wondering if I should just try and reflash the unit?

@Neworld- While I appreciate that you're helping w/ the instructions, the instructions simply haven't worked in my case. That's why I went to CL to troubleshoot it. The GUI is not working for me to connect to any WPA/WPA2 networks. I'm not trying to talk bad about anything or anyone I'm simply saying that it doesn't work for ME! :) I don't think I'm trying to do anything uber crazy for a setup so it should be pretty easy but it's just not working. I can follow directions w/ the best of them but my results don't seem to be consistent w/ the GUI. As I said I'll do some more troubleshooting this weekend and hopefully I can figure out what I'm doing wrong. If I connect through CL it works every time the first time and works w/ WPA2 and ICS w/ no errors. When I connect through the GUI it will not connect. I'm verifying connection w/ a simple iwconfig (wlan). Is the GUI somehow bypassing the normal wireless connection setup? I understand it's using the /etc/config/wireless config file but the ifconfig and iwconfig commands should still work to verify connection correct? Obviously I'm not the only one having a bit of a problem getting this setup so I'm just trying to do my part to help out and make things better!

I know 100% that this works...

I've already updated this to v2. I'll update it in the post as soon as I get home tonight.

I think I screwed up my Network Manager...

Pineapple hooked into a USB hub (not powered, but Pineapple plugged into the wall outlet, so I'm getting enough power).

Try to re-flash your pineapple: from the GUI, you can do it.

Then, I guess your issue is that you don't use a powered USB hud, it has already been discussed in other threads. Try to use a powered one :)

Thank you, Whistle Master! I will work on re-flashing the pineapple per the wiki.

Also, just for my understanding; would the low power cause phy0 to drop (or whatever the heck happened to me) completely? I'm trying to figure out the logs and see where it went wrong and why, so I don't do it again. I'll take your advice and get a powered hub, however I was hoping to have enough oomph in the Pineapple's power cord to power the Alpha and a usb. Guess that's not the case, though. I can see that a powered hub is needed. From brining up wlan1 then it cutting off when I tried to get it to hook up to an AP. Just not enough juice.

My only concern is that my issue was not totally one of power. I just don't want to repeat this since I couldn't figure out how to get everything back in order (other than re-flashing, but I have yet to do that).

Thanks again for the advice! I'll check out the forums on usb hubs and Alpha use.

Ok, after playing a few hours I'm now head deep into openwrt configs and uci setup. Here's the problem that I'm seeing as I follow the directions above 100%. After a fresh install of firware 2.7.0 and a new network module install I am ready to start fresh to setup WPA2 on a secondary alfa card. I follow the steps as above, hit save then click commit. It shows loading, then the wlan1 interface goes down. When I execute "wifi" from the cli I get the following errors:

root@Pineapple:~# wifi

command failed: Device or resource busy (-16)

wpa_supplicant_setup_vif(wlan1): Refusing to bridge sta mode interface

enable_mac80211(radio1): Failed to set up wpa_supplicant for interface wlan1

This is what /etc/config/wireless looks like:

config wifi-device 'radio1'

option type 'mac80211'

option channel '11'

option macaddr '00:c0:ca:6x:xx:xx'

option hwmode '11ng'

option htmode 'HT20'

list ht_capab 'SHORT-GI-20'

list ht_capab 'SHORT-GI-40'

list ht_capab 'RX-STBC1'

list ht_capab 'DSSS_CCK-40'

option disabled '0'

config wifi-iface

option device 'radio1'

option network 'lan'

option mode 'sta'

option ssid 'DXXXXXX'

option key 'password'

option hidden '1'

option encryption 'psk2+tkip+aes'

And this is my network:

BSSID PWR Beacons #Data, #/s CH MB ENC CIPHER AUTH

What am I missing here guys? Like I said, this will all connect w/ no problems from the CLI using some wpa_supplicant and udhcpc. This is why I believe it's a module issue.

I got it! I'm not sure if this is a bug report or not but the problem lies in the config/wireless file and can't be changed from the module. The module by default loads any new USB alfa as a network type "lan" it needs to be switched to "wan" as follows:

config wifi-iface

option device 'radio1'

option network 'lan' <-------- Needs be wan!!

option mode 'sta'

option ssid 'DXXXXXX'

option key 'password'

option hidden '1'

option encryption 'psk2+tkip+aes'
