Was looking at these two

First from Amazon:

That one has the cable and drivers ( pictured on site )

Costs around $9 after shipping in the States

Second was is from VirutralVillage

Doesn't really say what comes with it

Site says $6.99 w/ free shipping EDIT: (14-21 days)

Both claim they work on 5v and more importantly 3.3v

Picking up the latter we'll see how long shipping takes and will let you know if it makes a Pineapple unhappy or not

There really is no use for a serial cable unless you have the hardware with no firmware at all on it, or you have bricked it, or for developer purposes. But the upgrade process makes it 99.9% fool-proof updating. I am debating buying the console board that alfa makes but it's a bit pricey. Let me know if any of those work out.

Dont really care if I need it or not. ;)

Its the whole part of wanting to know how it all works.

Just in case I need to walk someone else through flashing via serial cable.

Better to have it and not need it than need it and cant find it.

For sure - I'm absolutely convinced I'll eventually bork this thing. Oh the joys of knowing just enough to be dangerous. I figure I might as well have the cable on hand as opposed to ordering it and waiting - especially if they're ~$5.

Darren has on order a few different types of cables/adapters to test and he will have them in the HakShop when he finds one he likes.

As Mr-Protocol said.

Also, make sure that if you order one, it comes w/ the cable too and not just the USB part....

(just a suggestion of course) :P

I've been using the ALFA proper console board with a USB to Serial adapter from Belkin. I had a PL2303 from Prolific but it died in an unfortunate cross-wiring incident. I have a few more Prolific chips on order and as soon as I find the perfect board I'll be posting my findings here.

hmm.. just got my cable, didnt realize that I ordered a 6-pin, but there doesnt seem to be a 4 pin one on their site. Any way I can still make this work?

pinout is:

Header Pin

Number

Name Type Colour Description

1 GND GND Black Device ground supply pin.

2 CTS# Input Brown Clear to Send Control input / Handshake signal.

3 VCC Output Red +5V output, (the instructions are for the 5v and 3.3v so im guessing this would be 3.3v for my cable)

4 TXD Output Orange Transmit Asynchronous Data output.

5 RXD Input Yellow Receive Asynchronous Data input.

6 RTS# Output Green Request To Send Control Output / Handshake

just got mine in the mail today

Shipping was 27 days <_<

Worked perfectly.

Was able to flash using the pin out from Mr. Protocols' Post and following the Clean Flash part of Seb's post.

Came with a board and cable.

All is well.
