iamk3 Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 can yall confirm what serial cable you are purchasing for use with the mk4? links are welcome. Started another topic for this so it can be followed easier as I am interested too. Quote
pewpew Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 (edited) Was looking at these two First from Amazon: USB 2.0 to TTL UART 6PIN Module Serial Converter That one has the cable and drivers ( pictured on site ) Costs around $9 after shipping in the States Second was is from VirutralVillage USB 2.0 to TTL UART Doesn't really say what comes with it Site says $6.99 w/ free shipping EDIT: (14-21 days) Both claim they work on 5v and more importantly 3.3v Picking up the latter we'll see how long shipping takes and will let you know if it makes a Pineapple unhappy or not Edited March 4, 2012 by pewpew Quote
PineDominator Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 (edited) Ordered this one from ebay 3.99US free shipping http://www.ebay.ca/i...ME:L:OC:CA:1123 I live in Canada B.C and most of the time when i order from Hong Kong/China I get way faster shipping compared to the states. Mr-Protocol Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 There really is no use for a serial cable unless you have the hardware with no firmware at all on it, or you have bricked it, or for developer purposes. But the upgrade process makes it 99.9% fool-proof updating. I am debating buying the console board that alfa makes but it's a bit pricey. Let me know if any of those work out. Quote
iamk3 Posted March 4, 2012 Author Posted March 4, 2012 But I want to be a cool kid and have one! :P Quote
pewpew Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 There really is no use for a serial cable unless you have the hardware with no firmware at all on it, or you have bricked it, or for developer purposes. ... Dont really care if I need it or not. ;) Its the whole part of wanting to know how it all works. Just in case I need to walk someone else through flashing via serial cable. Better to have it and not need it than need it and cant find it. Quote

For sure - I'm absolutely convinced I'll eventually bork this thing. Oh the joys of knowing just enough to be dangerous. I figure I might as well have the cable on hand as opposed to ordering it and waiting - especially if they're ~$5. telot Quote
genghis_tron Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 I got this cable because I wiped my network config on accident: http://microcontrollershop.com/product_info.php?products_id=2728&osCsid=i9i9m1oanvvdp74h6t8irt32b5 it's overpriced I'm sure, but I believe this is the cable you essentially need. If you can find it cheaper elsewhere, go for it. Quote
bobtheman Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 I would love for Darren and seb to comment on some suggested cables for use. Quote
Mr-Protocol Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Darren has on order a few different types of cables/adapters to test and he will have them in the HakShop when he finds one he likes. Quote
iamk3 Posted March 5, 2012 Author Posted March 5, 2012 Darren has on order a few different types of cables/adapters to test and he will have them in the HakShop when he finds one he likes. As Mr-Protocol said. Also, make sure that if you order one, it comes w/ the cable too and not just the USB part.... (just a suggestion of course) :P Quote
Darren Kitchen Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 I've been using the ALFA proper console board with a USB to Serial adapter from Belkin. I had a PL2303 from Prolific but it died in an unfortunate cross-wiring incident. I have a few more Prolific chips on order and as soon as I find the perfect board I'll be posting my findings here. genghis_tron Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 hmm.. just got my cable, didnt realize that I ordered a 6-pin, but there doesnt seem to be a 4 pin one on their site. Any way I can still make this work? pinout is: Header Pin Number Name Type Colour Description 1 GND GND Black Device ground supply pin. 2 CTS# Input Brown Clear to Send Control input / Handshake signal. 3 VCC Output Red +5V output, (the instructions are for the 5v and 3.3v so im guessing this would be 3.3v for my cable) 4 TXD Output Orange Transmit Asynchronous Data output. 5 RXD Input Yellow Receive Asynchronous Data input. 6 RTS# Output Green Request To Send Control Output / Handshake Quote
Mr-Protocol Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 Pins on the board are VCC TX RX GND so probably not. Quote
barry99705 Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 If the pins are removable, you might be able to reorder them, and leave the cts and rts taped back on the cable out of the way. I'd stick a meter on the power pins first though. Quote
pewpew Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 ... Second was is from VirutralVillage USB 2.0 to TTL UART Doesn't really say what comes with it Site says $6.99 w/ free shipping EDIT: (14-21 days) ... just got mine in the mail today Shipping was 27 days <_< Worked perfectly. Was able to flash using the pin out from Mr. Protocols' Post and following the Clean Flash part of Seb's post. Came with a board and cable. All is well. Quote
alextrebek Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 i use Nokia CA-42 for all my serial 3.3v needs crimp it to a rj45 then use a rj45 keystone jack with your female jumpers cable will last forever like this Quote
alextrebek Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Here is the Nokia CA-42, with this cable you only need rx, tx, and gnd. Quote
Mr-Protocol Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 You probably only need the 3.3v on the serial cable if you don't power the device locally. Not completely sure on this. Quote
