abferm
Does BackTrack automatically load aircrack-ng compatible drivers for WiFi cards?
Mr-Protocol
backtrack is pre-loaded (via the kernel if i'm not mistaken) for a lot of wifi devices. aircrack-ng really has nothing to do with drivers
abferm
I thought you had to use special drivers for packet injection and promiscuous mode to work?
Mr-Protocol
depends on the card. Some cards will not do injection at all. some will with modified drivers; some with normal drivers. I think from what Darren said in a haktip airmon-ng basically makes any card go into monitor mode if it isn't natively supported.

Yes, I was asking if BT automaticly installs and uses modified drivers for cards that need them.
co2shaun
Some cards will work right out of the box with backtrack and support monitor mode, injection, etc. For example my laptops internal card is ready to go as soon as I boot into backtack. My cheap usb card isn't. I had to search for the right driver, download it, and put it in the right directory to get that card working. Not real sure if that answers your question. Mr-Protocol
Yes, I was asking if BT automaticly installs and uses modified drivers for cards that need them. Well back in BT3, my old laptop needed to install drivers for the card to even work. I had to use fwcutter and so on to get my BCM4306 card working. I think in BT4 it worked only for monitor and injection, not sure if it would work like a normal card very well. Probably because I wasn't creating a mon0 interface to inject and sniff packets on. BT5 works just fine with the card to connect to access points, monitor mode and injection. Like I said. I'm pretty sure it's all kernel version for the added support. abferm
I just looked at a different page on the aircrack-ng website and found that the correct driver for my card is included in the Linux kernel since version 2.6.24.
AlanK
This thread made me wonder if there are proggrams for making an air card able to go into promiscuous mode, are there or does it depend on the air card?
Morfir
Well first off if your talking about air cards as in mobile gsm modems, they probably arnt operating on the same frequencies as 802.11 a/b/g/n. I'm sure there is a way to monitor those frequencies with some program but I'm not sure if they even support promiscuous mode. There's probably some device made to monitor the frequencies of gsm but I don't know of any. Regards, Morfir
Mr-Protocol
Doing a monitor mode on cell phones really wont help you any. It's all encrypted, channel hopping, etc... The only way to see it is to create your own base station and wait for people to connect to it. That was talked about in a Hak5 episode on defcon if I recall. Morfir
Doing a monitor mode on cell phones really wont help you any. It's all encrypted, channel hopping, etc... Is there actually a way to monitor it? That would be a interesting subject to look into, do you know of any material on the subject? Regards, Morfir
Mr-Protocol
Defcon had someone give a talk on it, about creating your own base station. Will cost you a good chunk of money and keep in mind possible FCC and wire tap law issues.
