G-Stress
Hi guys, I was just wondering. I am setting up a web server on a XP Pro SP2 machine and was wondering if I could possibly stream movies, like 700 MB avi's? Also if I were to do that would it be good performance I guess? I guess what I'm tryin to do is setup a movie/file server but I would like to stream the movies, I just didn't know if being 700 MB avi's or mpeg's would stream well or if it would even be a good idea:) Thanks in advance for any advice. Sparda
Is this over the internet or what?
VaKo
Check out VLC, could run an internet TV station from one install. If its behind your LAN, and not accessible, XP will work fine. If your planning to do it over the net, don't, you don't have the bandwidth.
Atari6502
If your planning to do it over the net, don't, you don't have the bandwidth. Actually as far as bandwitdh, it's possible. I have a regular cable modem hookup at home, and stream my cable programming via the net with a box called Slingbox. They do use there own propriatary software, but it works pissah. VaKo
hmmm... my bad. we only have 256/512 uploads in the UK, streaming anything doesn't seem to work well. Does your slingbox do some kinda compression on the stream? I can't see a way of streaming full res dvd rips over the net, other wise, why download them? proskater123
i agree. i don't think you shouuld because i uploaded a movie to one of home servers and it was only 30 mins long. It was buffering for about 20 mins before i could watch it. And this was from my home server useing windows fomat. .wmv
G-Stress
wow... again guys thanks alot resonses are sooo quick here :D As for my setup yes I was planning to do it over the internet. I have just a ADSL connection at home. Slingbox is that hardware or software? Also would it work for my scenario? Yes I was thinking the buffer could be a big problem, but I will still like to try it, just for the experience. Thanks again.
moonlit
You're probably pushing the limit trying to stream from an ADSL connection due to the slow upload speeds but give it a go... you could be ok, you never know...
metatron
If you have limited bandwidth set up a Flash Media Server.
Atari6502
Yeah I should probably have mentioned that. It does compress the signal. It spends about 10-20 seconds optimizing the connection, but it plays far better than i had thought possible. I have 384kbps up on my line. What's really cool is being able to watch on-demand programs on my ipaq wirelessly at work. :) No more magazines in the bathroom :)
