hexophrenic
Related to a previous recommendation to purchase a DOCSIS 3.0 modem...I did this recently to replace an older DLINK cablemodem (Docsis 2.0) in hopes of receiving the higher tiered service for free (you never know, the crap cable company I have might have not limited the rollout of new configs...had to hope). While I am still "only" getting 20down/2up service, it is fair more stable for transfer speeds now. It may only be coincidence, but I have been getting 20mbps anytime I try (depending on other traffic at the far end of course). I was getting between 2 and 8mbps most evenings with the DLINK, with 20mbps during the late night or work hours. The new modem is using channel bonding on the download side. I think that has improved my performance a lot, although not faster than I was supposed to get, but closer to it more often.

Yes, that has been my experience as well, is that its more stable, and faster overall on a consistent basis. My multiple download threads, instead of one having fast access and the others slow, now all share pretty much the same bandwidth with no real degradation, so while I'm not topping more than about 20-22mbps I get consistent speeds for multiple operations. For example, when i used to have Netflix streaming to my DVD player in the living room, my games would suffer on the PC and my ping would skyrocket. I don't have this problem any longer after upgrading to the Docsis 3.0 modem. Plus my old modem is going to get used soon. I purchased a breakout board to make a usb-jtag setup and plan to reflash it and lock down the firmware in the process. I also have some config files I want to play with to test the different speeds and see what I can do with it, but mainly just because I can at this point. I've never made any kind of electonic stuff at home, only in school, so it will be interesting to play with this little board and the modem to see what can be done. Eventually I plan to do this to my main modem to lock down the firmware to the original settings, so no one can mess with it. I'm paying for my internet, so I don't look at it as a TOS issue.
