There's a lot of things you can do with an old computer:

1. Build a nas server

2. Run virtual machines

3. Turn it into a media server

4. Use it for penetration testing purposes.

5. Build a firewall box.

Web server

Honeypot

thin clients (sort of)

cnc controller machine

My latest project is to turn a p3 into a robot. Interfacing all the sensors is the complicated part. An education to say the least. I am also doing home automation via the parallel port. xmas lights, antenna rotator, air cannon controller, weather station, and etc.

hmmmmmmmmm... just kidding hahhaa.. Also a NAS with any other OS like windows xp or server 2003, i got an old celeron 900 and a pentium 3 1100 that i use as a server for storage, hook it up with a raid pci controller, pci gigabit enthernet and you're set!

Also it's good to stream stuff that doesn't require any post processing, and one last thing torrents, uploads, downloads, "legal" only!

Ummm, you have a very dirt mind!!! Just kidding...

I am a security oriented user, so i am most of the time performing attacks and penetration testing against my virtual machines, and its fun too.

Plus there are so many things you can do with an old thread computer.

You could contribute to scientific research or other related research activity by offering some of its idle power.

Penetration testing used to be called dating when I grew up.

Ohhh I got it, so if someone asks you who's that girl I saw you with last night.

You say, I took her out on a penetration testing and was fun.
