smoke_007 Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 Has anyone every built or purchased a waterproof flat panel touch screen monitor for their shower? :) I think this could be a fun project. I'm just not sure about what type of material I could use to cover and seal up the touch sensitive part of the monitor that would still allow it to be touch sensitive. I think it would be nice to catch some hak5 or other tv shows while in the shower. It's time I could be educated and entertained. haha I would plan to connect it back to a computer and would control via the touch screen, of course. I already have speakers in the bathroom, so that doesn't need to be included in the monitor housing. Any ideas or thoughts? I'd even be happy if any one pointed me to a product they'd recommend. I haven't searched too much yet as I thought I'd through this out there to the community. I'd though about putting my iPad or iPod Touch in there, but I'm afraid it wouldn't hold up to the moisture, plus I don't want to have to put it in an enclosure and then have to take it back out after each shower. Thanks, Smoke.007 Quote
eovnu87435ds Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 I dont have any experience, and if noone answers, try posting this as a viewer challenge for thr ben heck show The Ben Heck Show For those of you who don't know him, he's the guy who built the supet awesome xbox 360 and ps3 laptops, and his show is all about making cool stuff. (ep 1 was a one-handed xbox 360 controller, and Ep 2 was building a portable cnc machine) Quote
okiwan Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 (edited) you just want to watch porn in the shower. also ben heck is cool. but all his viewer challenges are near impossible to build yourself. first episode was a challenge to build a small portable CNC machine. so he built the parts with his state of the art CNC machine. how the fuck does that help us?! smoke_007 Posted October 11, 2010 Author Posted October 11, 2010 okiwan, are you twelve? Sorry you can't appreciate how cool this project could be. I work way too many hours, barely enough time to sleep. I think it would be sweet to have a wall mounted waterproof touchscreen monitor in my bathroom. Then I could get a little more entertainment in my day. Smoke.007 Quote

Smoke.007 do you understand what sarcasm is? it was a joke. no need to get offended. like i really know enough about you to think you would want to build this project just to watch porn. if it makes you feel any better i would watch porn in the shower if i had it. ;) i would even have the screen mounted waist high. can you guess what i would use for a stylus? Ummm, your suggestion sounds more like, you already have one set up in the shower, with the height to your waist. Careful bro, you mom might catch you one day. I wouldn't want to have one in the shower, with my mom catching me on the action. Edited October 14, 2010 by Infiltrator Quote

Infiltrator Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 your infiltrator? why did you change it? I changed it without knowing what I was doing, I was hoping to change my second display but instead it changed my main display name. Now I cannot change it anymore, its saying that I don't have permissions to change. Quote

barry99705 Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 PPSSSHHHH!!! only worth it if your super rich. Didn't say it was cheap, just the cheapest I could find in 5 minutes on Google. ;) If you do eventually find a good one, make sure it's a resistive touch screen. Water does all kinds of fun things with capacitive screens. Quote

VaKo Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 Personally the thought of standing in a pool of water, with water running down me, and playing with anything that involves DIY electronics and 240volts is terrifying. Quote

Yea, I don't think I'd mess with your power over there. I've been bitten by 110 more times than I can count. 240 just sounds dangerous. Quote

Thanks, Smoke.007 Chances are you would have a resistive touch screen (the kind you push on) not a capacitive touch (the kind that reads the electrical conductivity of your skin) really any kind of clear plastic that is flexible would get the job done, even something like cling wrap. Altho I wonder if you wouldnt have an issue with it steaming up and making it hard to see whatever the monitor is displaying? You could easily get a lilliput 7" touchscreen, I have on in my car and they are fairly easy to set up, only take 12v DC and only pull something like 10 watts peak? I would feel pretty safe having one of those in the shower with me. You could even make a battery pack for it with very little trouble. I would worry about shorting out USB or VGA and possibly doing some damage to your computer tho... Tap water isnt a great conductor but still... Quote
PassComm Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 First off the posts on this are amusing. My first thought was, "Hey Dad why are you taking such long showers now?" But after about 8 hours I can see why one might want this. I love CCTV so having that in shower might be cool for all of 7 mins. If you just wanted video then there are cheap lcd, about 7", could be encased in plexi, velcro to wall. Or bash the tile out and install. This might creep out your GF though. Fast method to just be sure you want this. Academy is one place that has pouches for phones etc. Some with port outs, maybe a screen will fit in one. I found 7" tvs with line inputs for about 40 each awhile back, think it was office D. Quote

I've been there myself once, I was just hopping out of the shower and the room was all dark, so I went to switch to turn on the lights and because I was all wet and the switch wasn't isolated properly and to make the situation worse I wasn't wearing any foot protection, in addition the floor was all wet. Finally I went to turn on the lights, Bang got the biggest shock on earth. My hands went all numb and burning, the shock went through my hands and all way to my right foot and by the way it wasn't 110 volts it was 240 volts. So yeah! water and power does not mix. Quote
