Locations in The Netherlands, Czech Republic and Hungary were targeted but Sweden appears to have borne the brunt of the action. Seven locations including PRQ, which hosts WikiLeaks, have been raided. This morning news is coming in which indicates that very significant raids against illicit file-sharing are taking place in locations across Europe. Police in up to 14 European countries are said to be involved in an operation, said to be in the planning for two years, targeting the Warez Scene, the network of individuals and servers at the top of the so-called ‘Piracy Pyramid’. Details are scarce at the moment, but it is believed that at the behest of Belgian authorities, raids have gone ahead in The Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Germany, Great Britain, Czech Republic, Hungary and Sweden. Not unusually, Sweden appears to have borne the brunt of the activity with a total of seven locations raided including Stockholm, Malmö, Umeå, Eskilstuna and Solna. Armed with IP addresses, this morning police officers turned up at the Solna premises of PRQ, the company that in part hosts WikiLeaks.There is no suggestion that the controversial whistle-blowing site is connected to the operation. “At 9:00 this morning, five policemen were here,” explained PRQ’s Mikael Viberg. “They were interested in who were using two IP addresses from 2009 and onwards. We have no records of our clients but we’re handing over the e-mail addresses for those behind the IPs. However, it’s rare that our clients have mail addresses that are traceable.” This is a breaking news story and will be updated. Update: Swedish Prosecutor Frederick Ingblad told Swedish news outlet Expressen.se, “I can confirm that [this operation] is not about Wikileaks.” Update 2: Thus far, four people are said to be being questioned on suspicion of breaching copyright law. To be honest, I changed my mind towards downloading movies, I buy them instead of downloading them. But for musics and porn, I always download them. But all the little guys that download a movie now and then because there to busy/lazy to go out and rent one get nailed now... What happened to the good old days where you downloaded a movie if you like it you went and picked a copy up. Hell all the movies I own are onces that I downloaded. And yes I'll admit it :-) of course if your on the scale of WikiLeaks then well thats something that I know I'm going to get nailed for saying this but if you fire a general and then that happens maybe something is being down wrong? And tbh, we all know that downloading something for free rather than paying for it is wrong, despite the ways we rationalize it. And if you keep doing it, the interesting things you like won't get made because no one buys them, and all we will be left with is the tacky mass-market shit "everyone likes". okiwan Posted September 8, 2010 Author Share Posted September 8, 2010 if pirating is wrong i dont wanna be right. lol but seriously if there was no such thing i wouldnt buy anything any way. and there are film makers and musicians who support pirating for that exact reason. because with out it, there is no way that there creations would be seen or heard by such a larger audience. ya major productions artists would still be known but there are allot of underground artists that people would NEVER rent/buy there movies or music. yet thanks to pirating they get a large fan base. and im not just making this up iv read articles from directors and such who claim this. Yet in some countries (Canada included) Downloading music is not illegal as we are taxed on CD's and MP3's as we buy them making it legal to download music for free. It may seem wrong but at least in countries that use a 'tax' to pay the music industry on such items every one wins in the end. ( I personally buy CD's as I still prefer the physical copy but none the less). As for videos and games these are different and are only legal for 24-hours (same as the states I believe) so essentially you are trying before buying and not downloading for ever to keep (which is illegal) (correct me if im wrong on the last part but thats what it was last i checked). I download songs quite a bit illegally, not because I am too lazy to buy it or I find its too expensive, but because of the horrible DRM that comes with them. When I buy something, it becomes my property and I am free to do whatever I want with it (put it on my computer, my network, my phone, my mp3 player etc). The record companies haven't come round the idea of people owning things like that yet and still want to own the content even after you paid for it. Its a real shame for the artists, many of whom work very hard to produce quality content just for it to be ruined by greedy media companies. Its also cheap. Juno is also good, you can even buy WAVs. So for music, I think you can quite easily download legally, DRM free without breaking the bank, and this is why when it comes to music I think most arguments about pirating are kinda moot these days. There are artists who rely on unpoliced downloads for promotion, but not all of them do. Trent Reznor has some interesting comments on how to make a living from music in the 21st century. You still have to remember that making good music takes time, costs money and that the people who make it have to eat. As for movies and TV shows, I think piracy has replaced renting to a certain extent. We've all got a collection of pirated movies that we downloaded, watched once and have left clogging up a HDD with no intention to ever watch again. Which is a problem. What the movie industry needs to do is to come up with a cheap, easy way of doing online rentals. I remember my GF buying a copy of the Star Trek movie that came with a version you could watch on your PC, but the DRM was impossible to deal with, after 3 restarts, installing a ton of software and still having it sit there saying "connecting to rights management server...", I just usenetted the damn thing. It was a pain in the arse to use legally and the only way I could get it to work was to pirate it, despite having a legal copy in my hands. This needs to change. At the end of the day, piracy is something I vigorously defended when I was a penniless student. But once I had a income, buying things wasn't really an issue. BIG BIG NIN fan right here. also a good way to end piracy (for certain products) is to offer it for free. the creators of south park put every season on there website to stream in HD. they said by doing this they ended piracy of there show in one fatal swoop. i donno if thats there exact words but it was something like that. and they said that every one else should take this as example and follow. and its true because i dont have a single episode of south park downloaded. if i wanna watch one i go to there site an i can see a description of the show an pick which one i want. why take up space on my hard drive?
