If I may say,

(granted I could be totally wrong about all of this, but this is my .02)

The reason I personally believe the OS battle has/can become quite nasty is because people are fighting over MORE then Operating Systems.

See, SOME people talk computing very seriously, and the OS you choose is kind of like the religion you've chosen to follow. (or not)

Some people, see Linux as one of the ways they can begin to free themselves from Captilasm, by using products that are free, and (basically) made though a relaxed version of socialism.

It CAN be seen as a symbol of rebellion against the "norm", a way of giving themselves an identity.

If you go to gnomelook.com some of the groups on there are groups like the Polish Freedom Fighters etc.

Thus, Linux can be modifed to be a sort of symbol of freedom.

Where as mircosoft on the other hand, is the norm, dull. (in certain peoples eyes) and they view it as dumb.

(hence the flaming on the linux side)

Mircosoft is the standard for computing OS, (at least in desktops and laptops) but some people believe to be poorer code.

I will add that Microsoft in the past, hasn't taken very good care of some of their customers, so this may also be a source of discontent.

in regards to flam wars that have taken place over this,

A lot of young adults take pride in how fluent they are with technology. Thus their choice of OS, CAN be one of the ways they show how much they know. HENCE insulting one's OS CAN be insulting their intelligence in computing.

I pretty much all comes down to this,

Mircosoft is meant (again this is a opinion) for people who don't really want to learn how their computer works, merely to get it to do what they say.

Linux is meant to be more along the lines of having direct control over the operating system.

Anyways, thats my humble opinion, and it may be wrong or right, but its just what I think through what I've seen and studied.

(granted I could be totally wrong about all of this, but this is my .02)

eh..

I use Windows because it's easy.

I use linux because it's different and highly customizable.

The whole linux is communism bullshit is old too. There's a clear difference between communism, and everyone contributing to a project. If this is the case, then every religion that helps the poor and every organization that gives money to charity (including those regular people who do the same), every class project or group project, and even every act of kindness when including more than one person would also be classified as communism..

WARNING: wall of text. if you don't want to read, this sums it up in about 12 seconds: http://xkcd.com/438/

Fanboys will be fanboys. I don't care, as long as they do it somewhere else. As for me, I use all three of the trifecta in my home. I have a macbook unibody that has 7 and OSX, and I have 2 servers, one ubuntu and one win2k3.

I like osx because it gives me far better battery life than while booted into 7, and when I have to use the trackpad(multi-touch support sucks for windows). It also runs adobe cs5 beautifully. Windows 7 is great when I wanna play some games and do some 3D modeling, since nvidia's drivers kick the pants off of apple's video drivers. The ubuntu server hosts my website and other services like vnc and ssh, so that I don't have to be trapped behind my school's webfilter. The windows server just runs utorrent 24/7, with a webUI set up, as well as Remote Desktop Connection, in case I run into problems with ssh/vnc.

I'm a believer of the right tool for the job, but that doesn't stop me from jabbing at the OSes from time to time. Not as one of those people who go from door to door trying to get you to convert to their religion, but in a "been there, done that" kind of way.

Anyways, point im trying to make is that even though you get to hide yourself behind a keyboard and a computer screen, and theoretically thousands of miles, its still a real person on the other end. if it's something you wouldn't say to someone in person, don't type it here either. Or if it happens to you, laugh it off and stop reading it.

I personally use Windows, Ubuntu and OSX. I don't flame either one and I just use them to get the job done. I use windows for gaming, yes I know osx has steam now, but come on since when can I just pick up an old windows game disk and play it on osx, I'd have to find an osx version, if available. I use ubuntu because it's free and all it's softwear is free, it's simple and I know it's not going to go wrong. Also has it's uses...

Osx however is for my creative side. Adobe CS5 works so well with osx, final cut pro and everything else.

Boooooo... Fuckin' Booooooo.

I dunno, if anyone wants a laugh well unless you are like this guy, someone sent me a video talking about this guy. He calls himself AppleSoldier. I don't think he is actually on crack, he just looks that way.

http://www.youtube.com/user/AppleSoldier?blend=2&ob=1

It was this video I was sent to...

If anything, nobody here should worry coming across fan boyish when this exists.

Oh I remeber the days when I was trying to learn linux. It was crazy! Everyone I that I asked that knew the OS just responded with 'omg im so leet your not...figure it out'...and that was my friend telling me to use it! (WTF!). He told me to start with slackware.....wtf. But anyway!

I lived with a Mac fanboy (programmer for apple) and a linux nut (managed a linux server farm).....and there was me using both winXP/2000/7 and various flavors of linux with an iphone.....you can start to see the picture when computers/electronic companys were brought up in convo....it turned to a blind sh*tstorm quick everytime. After sitting them down one day I got them to come to realize the only reason they "hated" the other OS was due to their lack of knowledge of it.

The only reason I hate on an OS/company is usually to do with practices (removing apps from the app store, ect)

(my $0.02)

@cabster21 - "I hate people who claim not using Ubuntu hurts GNU/Linux"

Who-TF are those people? I mean.. Ubuntu is the most commercialized *home use* centered linux there is.. I would think the opposite :?

Just saw this.

Maybe I didn't put it across well. I mean the people who claim, if you are going to use Linux you should support Ubuntu.

If that's what you thought I meant, I thought I would give a video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnqwJRgCsmo Just a quick search in youtube. Idiots use computers, look I use this forum... Fan boys who are public are usually a little dumb.

@cabster21 - Wow that dude is total fail. Did you read the scrolling text on the right hand side when he was talking? I think the Ubuntu community should take note of this guy. He makes me NOT want to use it :X I like Ubuntu myself and I'll be completely honest why. I am a slacker. Ubuntu, for me is really easy to re install, which is why it's been my primary for a while on my desktop cause Win7 choked and I can't seem to fix it unless I reload. Not wanting to reload, I just figured I would cut out a decent partition and just sit on Ubuntu for a while. I will eventually reload but for now I am happy. I am trying to get my user/dev side going right now instead of worrying about my repair/reload/fix side.

"Supporting all non user friendly Linux Disrtos like Fedora is a waste of time" OMG... really? If it were not for all the different versions of linux, Ubuntu would not have even taken off. I honestly wish I knew this guy's home IP, I would get root, inject a really locked version of some old school Slackware or even some Arch and reload his kit.

The login screen would read "Since your so f*ing smart, you can create your own login script for the kernel", which would just drop him into Vi. lol

Tim from OSGUI is a fucking retard. I and many others have had run ins with this clown. Wait till you see the music videos this wanker has made. I would link to him but he is a you tube partner and be fucked if I want to give him any money. I asked him to meet me at the Linux Conference in January so we could debate in person, and in his uual style blocked me. He has accused people of being wife bashers, homophobes and heaps of other shit for using anything other than ubuntu or a derivitive of it. He's a fail idiot, who can't use the terminal and make broad and sweeping stements he cant back up like AMD hands down is better than intel cpus in every benchmark. His knowledge of linux is limited and he obviously doesn't comprehend the way it has and will continue to evolve. He uses windows on his EEEPC for office.

I'm ashamed he's an Aussie and I hope to bump into him one day.

Man, the scrolling bullshit up the side of the video tipped it for me but the whole thing's just so obnoxiously self-important. I don't much like Linux on the desktop (though I don't begrudge the use of it, your choice), I hate shit like this even more. These fanboys will spin a tale worthy of a freakin' Oscar if they thought you might possibly, maybe switch and abandon the evil Mikro$haft, it has absolutely zero basis on reality and all it'll end up doing is either pissing people off or just confusing people for a while. That's not to say that all Linux users are this way, much like not all Windows users are oblivious, malware-infested luddite-sheep with their heads up Billy Gates' very own arse and not all Mac owners are card-carrying, turtleneck-wearing, blinkered Jobsians who'll put up with anything just as long as it has a fruit sticker.

Rant though I often do, I have zero expectation that anyone might switch based on my own opinions, I have no vested interest in any particular OS. This is not the way to make people adopt desktop Linux! Funny really, it's so open yet so based on lies and propaganda... go figure.

Yeah well he made a terrible mac vs pc vs linux video and I basically commented saying "gee thanks for making linux users look like dickheads."

There is little point in me telling people they suck because they use windows. Use whatever you want. I'm all for advocating Linux but there is the right way and an idiot way of going about it.

Speaking of zealous advocates, I am going to see Richard Stallman at the world computing conference in Brisbane in Septemeber. Should be interesting.

I had a friend that got Amiga tattooed to his arm, that's the only platform I've really been passionately fan-boy about but I think it really did deserve some fanboyism since it was genuinely better than most computer around at the time. Linux/Windows/MacOS all have their strengths and weaknesses. I stick mainly to Windows because it has the best game and multimedia support and I'm just used to it I guess.

people just like to root for what they run. (no pun intended). look how many people fight over PS3 v.s. Xbox360. An now its android v.s. Iphone. american sports cars v.s. japanese sports cars. east side v.s. west side. it happens every where not just for OS.

Amen! lol I personal don't get the whole fan boy "My os is better then yours" stuff. I mean an O.S is an O.S Each with pluses and minuses. I use windows and linux. Windows for itunes and because most (forgive me linux lovers) games and some business programs run on windows ONLY or just better on windows. I use linux for servers, pentesting, programing, web design, ETC. Windows is for games and entertainment. I use both for word (open office) and browsing and i must say linux (at least in my experience) is faster and handles ram 10x better. of course windows vista and 7 are great improvements but i still think they could handle it a little better. Mac on the other hand is nice but i just can't justify spending that money. Maybe if i was a graphics artist but not as an IT. I do deal with all three OS's and like them all for different things. if i had to pick one it would be linux because it has the most of what i need. and pentesting is better IMHO on linux then windows.
