AVG free edition for antivirus, although its picked nothing up for years. I also use virtual PC 2004 for playing with things I'm not sure about, that way if it goes tits-up I can delete it and start again. For proactive sercurity I use a few linux live CD's such as Helix, RIPlinux and back|track. And apps like wireshark, nmap, angryIP, cain&able, netstumbler, hirens boot disk, bartPE. VaKo Posted July 24, 2006 Share Posted July 24, 2006 Depends how fucked it is, have you run AdAware on it? Might just be worth backing up your personal data, nuking the HD and reinstalling windows. If its been running for ages and its not been locked down, its probally got all kinds of crap floating around the harddisk by now. can i do that without losing all my apps or files? Burn your personal data to DVD's or the like. If you have gigs of stuff, get another hard disk and copy it to that. Your applications won't make it, so remeber to back up any licence info you have as well. Once you've done this, and checked to make sure nothing has been left behind, power your box down, disconnect the backup hard disk, and reinstall windows. When you have windows back up, first thing to do is go to MS update (you'll need to do this 3-4 times to get everything, then get AVG free edition, Zone Alarm free edition and adaware/spybot S&D.
