szczepam Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Hello Everyone!!! I have 2WIRE 2701HG-B from AT@T. There is no option such as Parental Control. Does anyone know how can I get this option. I want to have Internet Access Control. AT@T has blocked somehow this option and it is not available . Installing a software Parental Control form AT@T is not an option their parental control is terrible. Quote
Charles Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 (edited) If you cannot do it from the router, there are other parental control software around. NetNanny is one that I can think of. I'm sure there are others. Better idea would be to get a good DSL modem and a separate router. EDIT: I remember trying to use the "modem" that I got from my ISP, when I first got high speed internet 6 years ago. I had to pay for a garbage motorola modem, but ended up getting sick of the constant drops and slow speed and picked up a Linksys modem. Mind you that was over 6 years ago.. but it was definitely worth it. Edited April 23, 2010 by Charles Quote
szczepam Posted April 23, 2010 Author Posted April 23, 2010 (edited) Thanks Charles Spending extra money is what I don't want. The 2WIRE is doing the job great. I just need to unlock the option, that is the question. Edited April 23, 2010 by szczepam Quote
Charles Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 (edited) The only thing I really found for 2wire is that Parental controls and whatnot are a "Value-added Service" but couldn't find any info on how to unlock or configure them on a 2wire gateway. The info I mostly found were detailing the pluses and features of parental controls, but no way to set them. This might help: http://support.2wire.com/?page=view&article=107 Edited April 23, 2010 by Charles Quote
H@L0_F00 Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 http://www.opendns.com/solutions/overview/ Although a good option, a simple google for "porn" turned up quite a few sites in the first two pages that weren't blocked. szczepam, just make sure to thoroughly test your choice (or choices, you could always combine more than one option) before deciding it's "safe." A friend wanted help blocking sites he didn't want his little brother from seeing. He also wanted it for free, of course. I recommended K9, although I have never used it. You might want to combine maybe OpenDNS and K9 (or whichever), because one will block sites the other won't. Quote

If you set it to too high and it still not blocking what you want, you could consider setting up a transparent proxy with (squid) and specify in a blocked-list what sites should not be accessed. http://www.squid-cache.org/ Edited April 24, 2010 by Infiltrator Quote
H@L0_F00 Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 I don't remember. I just checked the boxes that said "porn", "sex", or whatever. I didn't play around with it a whole lot because I was only checking it out; I don't really need it. Quote

H@L0_F00 Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 A tiny bit for a second, but it could have happened for any reason. I don't suspect it was OpenDNS, because it only handles DNS resolutions, which could take several milliseconds without you ever noticing anything or even caring if you did notice it. Quote
gcninja Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 a baseball bat and over the shoulder viewing with time limits usually do the trick Quote

I swear my connection went slow when I started using OpenDNS servers, so when I switched over to my ISP dns servers I really noticed an increase in performance. That's weird. That is as simple as it is, no software installation required. Quote
