bwhahahahahaha!....woo...ok im good now...

try zone alarm or my personal fav agnitum OUTPOST firewall. Outpost is good because it blocks advert servers. Its good to block that shit at the firewall level. Its open source aswell. Im not sure why it hasnt been picked up the OS community.... maybe its because they sell a commercial version of it, aswell as the free one. meh

I used to like zonealarm, but it's got crappy ecently, now I use kerio, and the good thing about kerio is that the free version has better functionality then the free version of Zone Alarm.

To that end let me explain this about kerio. Kerio is a profitable company, so to try and get you to pay for there firewall to use the free version you have to use the 30day free trial of the pay for one. When the trial runs out it will say "The trial has run out, give us money", don't! The free version is good, and thats all you want.

I use Sygate Personal Firewall on my Windows laptop to stop things phoning home.

Sygate died last Oct - symantec bought them out :(

This is why Norton firewall 2006 is a crap load better than 2005 LMAO

Symantec following in Bill Gates footsteps lol

You can still get it hear.

Metatron, are updates still be provided? I used to use Sygate and loved it but once they were bought out I stopped for fear of using out of date software.

Also, I'll that this opportunity to ask a question about Zone Alarm. Whenever I'm running utorrent, I get an error message from windows saying, "Truevector service, had to be shut down bla bla bla." That only occurs when torrenting something and I was curious as to if any of you guys and gals has experienced something similiar. To remedy this I've tried updates, clean installs, everything with no success.

Sparda, thanks for the link to Kerio, I'll try that later when I get back from work.

No, updates are no longer available. I don’t know about Zone Alarm as I only tried it for 4 days and I found it bloated so I removed it, but I had no issues with µTorrent.

I only use software firewalls on laptops to stop things phoning home, so as long as it doesn’t waste much of my resources and stops things phoning home I’m happy with it.

I hear people say it all the time, and I respond in the same way. I supposes it's fear in the same sence that you are scared of a knife, it's a usfull tool, but if used wrongly you can hurt your self. Still, you shouldn;t be scared to 'go any where' on the Internet, of course some places should be avoided, such as the goatse web site simpley becasue it's not very plesent.

I don't bother with software firewalls on my machines anymore. I find being careful on the internet and a good hardware firewall does the business enough.

Really you should be running a software firewall as well - a hardware one will not still let traffic through from the internal side.

But why would I want to stop out going connections? Theres nothing here on that my machine that would be a problem.

You need a software firewall if you like visiting the red light district of the internet, download random programs that will "speed up your internet" and opening every e-mail attachment that you are sent.

Also the fact that my network has a very complicated set up which also leads me to believe that i don't need one.

It depends on what you are running really I suppose, but it does stop /allow you to stop various programs/utilities/spyware from "phoning home" - and so your internet connection is abit more stealthed. However if you are the sort of person who knows every program/service that is running on your system and are spyware free all the time then its probably not needed from this perspective, but another issue is intrusion into your network , yes someone may get in through one avenue but if each computer is running a software firewall then at least all your machines are not compromised at the same time.

Firstly why would I care that programs phone home? I own all the programs that I am using so if I get better support and updates, as long as I say yes its fine.

Spyware is not a problem unless you like visiting the sort of sites which host it, which are places to get warez or porn. Neither of which I have a need to go to so don't.

Intrusion onto my network is practically impossible (I won't say completely because with time nothing is). Even if you find a weird network port and plug-in you won't be able to get anything.

I think people who run software firewalls are the people that are scared of using the internet. The only time that I would use one is if I had a direct connection to the internet or I was at a wireless access point other than my own.
