I put it on my 8gig thumb drive with unetbootin, but I downloaded the ISO myself first. Worked flawlessly, and Im using unetbootin-windows-312.exe v1.1.1.1

Im using VMware workstation 6.5.3. Im gonna trying doing what you did and do a manual install instead of just downloading the pre built image.

I had a simliar issue with BT4 Final today. Tried their VM since mine was from a mod version Mati gave me, and not the full Final. With the full final VM version, artsd seems to eat up 100% of the cpu. Go into the start menu, settings, sound and multimedia, sound system and then DISABLE the sound drivers. Onc eyou reboot, you should then have no more issues with the system running slow. I also edited xorg.conf to get my full 1440x900 resolution back instead of the default 1024x768 resolution, which was kind of wonky and pixelated on my monitor setup. I also added a new grub menu item and took out the vga=0x317 settings, and set it to vga=normal. My screen is now proper size and all the pixelation crap is gone. Nice, smooth, and no more lag.

If anyone has issues with their ralink usb cards that used the rt73 drivers, I also fixed them and got monitor mode and injection working again. The default drivers in BT4 do not allow monitor mode or iwpriv settings for my Linksys wusb54gc card, so disabling the default drivers and upgrading to the "rt73 enhanced" drivers is the way to go. I would just keep trying. There are more than 1 site hosting copies, but the bt-linux.org site will send you to a random mirror. You may have just gotten one that was down or under heavy load.

When I did mine, I click DISKIMAGE for the ISO instead of using the drop down menu. Then, I point to the new ISO and select the thumbdrive letter of my drive. DO NOT USE UNETBOOTIN TO DOWNLOAD THE IMAGE. Get it from the official site http://www.backtrack-linux.org/downloads/ (double check your MD5 to make sure you are using a good file, and dont use alternate sites to download, they may be either older beta and mod versions, or even rouge software - yes, there have been a few site pop up impersonating bt4 mirrors, but only to be jimmy jacked by these sites)

Im also using an older version of unetbootin 312. Just in case the newer version is incompatible with the latest BT4 Final ISO or causing your problem not to boot, I've uploaded the version I used here: http://www.digip.info/unetbootin-windows-312.exe

I could be wrong, but I think mine uses grub to boot it from.

If it just says boot, try hitting enter and see if it loads the menu or straight to BT.

Don't use remote exploit for the image, use the backtrack-linux.org site. The two parties have split, and I'm not 100% sure that RE is even hosting the current release, so check the link you are using for the ISO! I dont even think RE has a link to the ISO itself on their site anymore (unles syou are using google to search for it, might be linked to old files), but probably redirtect to http://www.backtrack-linux.org/

Use http://www.backtrack-linux.org/downloads/ as that is now the OFFICIAL site of Back|Track.

If it still fails might be your thumbdrive itself. I would DISABLE all U3 capabilities on the thumbdrive drive. It may be causing your issues, as the U3 partition will look like a CDrom to the computer when booting and may be causing your error. I would either kill all U3 functionality on the drive, or get a NON-U3 and try again, but sounds like it may be the thumb drive itself.

Two things you cna do to test the ISO. 1, load it in a VM and see if it boots properly. It may not function 100% in a vm, as the ISo doesn thave the same files the VM download has, but at least you will see if it boots. 2, burn a DVD and boot off of it. If the DVD boot works, then try another flash drive, as yours is probably causing your troubles.

Yeah I had a simular problem with the U3, Dig IP is right, you need to disable the U3 function there is a software that does it I forget the name, you will find it on google by searching for "disable u3 usb"or something simular to that.

Either ine did, or I got it form the U3 site itself, but check on the drive, there might be tools on there to disable the cdrom portion and re-enable it when needed. Deleting the files themselves will break the drive and although it will work as storage, I think it will foobar when formatted as bootable.

Oh, and its Digi-P, pronounced like "Digi" in Digital and Pee as in the letter P.

Yeah, there is a utility to remove the U3 part. It's in the U3 menu thinger that launches.

It doesn't work by default. You have to enable it, check out the backtrack forums there are like a million threads on it.

"ifconfig eth0 up" I beleive that is the command for wired, wifi is "ifconfig wlan0" replacing 0 if needed with a 1 or maybe 2

Sandisk has the U3 Removal tool for their Sandisk U3 cruzer micro drives.

I was confused about the networking of BT before I poked around and found that it said it wasn't enabled by default.

At least enabling it is as simple as running one command.

Thanks, this command worked the best for me so far. The only thing now I guess is how do I make it so changes in BT4 stay and not reset to default everytime I boot? Like say I want to add a firefox plugin so that it stays perm.on the usb? or any settings I put will load the next time I boot from my usb drive? thanks

The latest backtrack uses Grub, not syslinux, as described in the previous post. Scroll down to the "Persistent Changes" section, its as easy as editing your grub menu.

i run all my other OS in Sun VirtualBox and it runs great with no problems and i have usb support. i have seen a few websites with other people using VMware including this post and i was wondering whats the difference between VMware and Sun VirtualBox?
