Xbox 360 optical drive switching

I didn't whether to put this in gaming or here but it's a question so i put in here.

anyway, I was trying to mod my 360, come to find out i can't just simply re-flash the firmware on my optical drive, so i put it back together and now my optical drive is broken....

I know i can order a new one from some 3rd party stores and such, but i figured since im going to have to buy a new optical drive anyway i might as well get a drive that i can re-flash the firmware on and mod like i was trying to to begin with,

so my question is if it is even possible to put a different type of optical drive into a 360 other than the type it came with?

I looked all over the web for info on this but i can't find anything about putting a different kind of optical drive into it.

Or if anyone knows of a site i can buy a modded optical drive from, that would work as well.

Thanks in advance

the drives cant just be swapped. Drivers are linked to the Motherboards via keys, you need to extract the key from the original drive, then spoof it onto the new drive of the same type. (Not the easiest of tasks if you cant flash the drive).

How did you fail to flash the drive? If you just couldnt do it, then chances are you probably didnt connect the cables back in correctly.

If you tryed to flash and fail, then your xbox is now and expensive media centre. All and all, more information is needed.

With the JTAG exploit, you could create a new/dump the old DVD key. If you don't have the latest bootloader on your box that is.

All the sites i went to about flashing my firmware said that my particular drive didnt have a firmware download available, so i didn't have the file to flash it with.

and my drive just wont open all the way or close all the way, my friend told me it's prolly the servos, I'm not a hardware person, so i don't know.

for mods like this I wish someone could write a app that does all of the work for you (like you just browse for the new firmware file and it will handle all of the keys and editing and flashing for you since the steps are pretty much the same for everyone, why not make it automated instead of forcing people to go through all of the steps which increases the risk of bricking their drive or console)

oh wait, thats called jungle flasher.

JF is the most it will be automated, you press read, it gets your key, it them creats the Custom FW, you press write, and it writes the new CFW to the drive, with all drives (bar the very new revision of the Lite-On Drives - Non-hackable as of today).

@joeberry, What drive do you have? and did you open up the drive itself?

k, everything you need to know about replacing your 360 drive.

Use this knowledge to replace your drive or to repair it.

Before you can do anything you need your drive key. Without it there is nothing you can do. There is NO way around this. If you misplace, or destroy your drive key you are SOL. The drive key is used to verify the integrity of the system to prevent piracy (kinda of, but close enough). Without the correct drive key the 360 cannot play game disks. DVD's and market place games do work tho.

To get your drive key you need to connect your 360 drive to your computer. (i'm assuming that you have already done this based on your previous posts.) I found that DOSflasher was more compatible than MKflasher. Using DOSflasher read the firmware off of your drive and save it. Go into windows and use Firmware Toolbox to read your Drive key. SAVE IT SAVE IT SAVE IT. Put it on a flash drive as read only, burn it do a disk. Upload it to a server. Bury it. JUST DON'T LOSE IT. This key is worth the same as your xbox.

If you cant read your drive make sure you're doing it right, there are bunch of tutorials around for that. If your drive controller board is dead and the nand (I think it is a nand...) is not damaged you can read it with a proper programmer. But the programmer costs more than a new 360 mobo with drive key. If you flashed your drive without first recovering/merging your drive key you are SOL. You now have a glorified DVD player.

If you didn't kill you drive and you got the drive key your all set. You can buy a new drive (model dosent matter) and using Firmware Toolbox spoof the "vender ID" of the drive. For example my 360 has a Toshiba-Samsung ms25 in it but I replaced it with as ms28. (not compatible normally)

I think thats everything. Because modding is a sore subject...

DISCLAIMER! this information is only to be used in the recovery / repair / and replacement of damaged xbox360 drives. This is the only know way for end users to replace there 360 drive and it is microsofts own fault for disallowing consumers to replace there drive without the need for firmware flashing that is generally reserved for use in piracy.

ok, i am going to have to get a new drive,

so as long as i get the key off the old, which i can still do, then it doesn't matter what kind of drive i get?

and re-flashing the firmware will allow me to play burnt games as well.

did i get all that right?

its best to get the same drive type, as its easier if you dont know what your doing, but as FireTime said, you can spof your key onto any drive these days.

You said earlier that you read you cant mod the drive, the only drives that cant be done are the new Lite-Ons, also they keys from this drive cant be read. So again i ask, What drive do you have? and did you open up the drive itself?

If you did open up the drive, then chances are you muffed it putting it back together, or if you remover the eject leaver, or dvd drive bezzel, chance is you again muffed putting it back together. the Servos dont just give out if all you did is uplug it, therefore the drive is probably not dead.

Try removing the front bezzel of the drive (the silver bit that says Xbox) and remove the eject switch. Put the drive in the case, and turn it on, and try ejecting.

My comment stilll stands, if you can run the JTAG hack, you can obtain or create new ODD key from Linux. As long as you have a box not fully updated you can exploit it.

Jungle flasher is pretty click and go but I've never had any luck with it. I prefer dosflasher, CLI FTW.
