Title of topic is supposed to be Need- not neex.

Ubuntu is getting really old. I am looking for a new *nix OS to use as a desktop.

I was going to throw Solaris on my desktop but i was wondering if anyone could recommend me a different highly stable solution. I uaully leave my systems on because they are "busy" alot.

throw me some distros or should i just stick with open solaris?

slitaz? (if you want something like yet usable)

There are a plethora of linux distros out there for any need.

Check out Distrowatch.com and just browse till you find something you like.

Funny you say that though, I am going back to Ubuntu to try on my laptop. Installing netbook remix cause I like the simplicity in the menu system. I just wanna have it usable without much fuss..

I do this every couple of years. I've been a long time Slackware user (since '97, I think version 3.3). When Slackware dropped Gnome I've been kinda evaluating different distros / Unix based OS's, although I'm still using it. Some of the OS's I've tried recently include:

Ubuntu

OpenSuse

Zenwalk

Slitaz

Debris

CrunchBang

OpenSolaris

On my list yet to try are:

Arch

Mint

Vector

Hell I may even revisit the BSD's

Just got Opensolaris installed. Runs Pretty well.

I have a question though.

How do i list filesystems?

In ubuntu i can go "Fdisk -l" and it will list the filesystems but how can i get the equivilent of that in Solaris?

I want to mount my EXT3 drives in solaris, whats the easiest way to do this?
