ssmithisme
Title of topic is supposed to be Need- not neex. Ubuntu is getting really old. I am looking for a new *nix OS to use as a desktop. I was going to throw Solaris on my desktop but i was wondering if anyone could recommend me a different highly stable solution. I uaully leave my systems on because they are "busy" alot. throw me some distros or should i just stick with open solaris?

Swathe
Why not straight debian? I guess is depends on what you do on your systems? Considered BSD? ( I know it's not linux)
h3%5kr3w
slitaz? (if you want something like yet usable) There are a plethora of linux distros out there for any need. Check out Distrowatch.com and just browse till you find something you like. Funny you say that though, I am going back to Ubuntu to try on my laptop. Installing netbook remix cause I like the simplicity in the menu system. I just wanna have it usable without much fuss..

I've been a long time Slackware user (since '97, I think version 3.3). When Slackware dropped Gnome I've been kinda evaluating different distros / Unix based OS's, although I'm still using it. Some of the OS's I've tried recently include: Ubuntu OpenSuse Zenwalk Slitaz Debris CrunchBang OpenSolaris On my list yet to try are: Arch Mint Vector Hell I may even revisit the BSD's

ssmithisme
Just got Opensolaris installed. Runs Pretty well. I have a question though. How do i list filesystems? In ubuntu i can go "Fdisk -l" and it will list the filesystems but how can i get the equivilent of that in Solaris? I want to mount my EXT3 drives in solaris, whats the easiest way to do this? TalioGladius
I know it's really just ubuntu with some add-ons, but I'm really digging the latest linux mint release.
h3%5kr3w
Not trying to sound like a Mac fanboy, but even though Mint is based on Ubuntu, it's heavily modified and is changing rapidly to be it's own distro. But yeah, I like them both.

nick
If you like the RH distro, I'd go with CentOS. I like their concept, not sure why it hasn't been mentioned. I'm new to this site, so I haven't read much through the forums yet.
