Fonera replacement that is wide open

Fon is coming out with a new router. Probably won't be compatible, though. http://english.martinvarsavsky.net/general...d-congress.html

the new fonera uses a realtek chip which is either too new or incompatible with openwrt from a quick google.

That says 'Ralink' upside-down, not Realtek.

a slip of the tongue. the photo i linked to (although the link seems to take you to the gallery view) comments on the hardware as: Ralink RT3050F Main Chip, MX25L1605DM (16mbyte chip), M12L2561616A-6T (4M * 16bit) memory chip .... is that a USB port to our right?

Yes but it appears none of the control hardwared is populated.
