Ah nice one Rayman,

Out of curiosity what o.s are you running your VPN on? you just using a windows xp machine, windows 2k server or something? Reason I ask is I am considering rigging something like this up myself. I was previously just using windows xp pro for VPNing on my desktop but I now currently have access to a server that I was considering using.

OpenBSD with OpenVPN of course, wouldn't have it any other way.

All the 38 accespoints i got online got the same (roaming) SSID named WECc or FON_WECc (WECc= Wireless-EmmerCompascuum)

WEP and WPA - off

Make use of 2 cabel ISP's and 6 ADSL ISP's.

Every one of the ISP's line's are 20 Mb/s down and 1 Mb/s upload.

Thanks for the info Stingray, should have figured it was a unix solution. =P

Neinsager now WTF do you need all that for? lmfao

Sounds like he is operating some sort of WISP solution.

I'm tempted to get a copy of Windows server, but I really can't justify the price at the moment.

I've want to change mine to some random saying, but then my parents would probably ask to many questions. So it's just my name, Witch I won't tell you :|

Anyone know if "If you see this, You've been hacked" would fit?

Hello All,

My SSID=EQUINOX, I got that name off of Voyager Episode 5x26-6x01. USS Equinox with Capt. Ranson, Janeway busted him. So I've been naming my networks and domains by that name for years. I'm using WPA2 Personal with Endian Firewall. If I need to remote in. I use PPTP VPN to get to my systems. I don't have my firewall or routers with forwarded ports for remote stuff not even SSH TCP forwarded.

If you don't config your router and it's set from Linksys with defaults. Lucky you! There is a botnet out there that prays on Linux routers but not all of them.

Guys, have fun!

I'm surprised by some of the responses here. People seem to think that not broadcasting the SSID helps security, or that MAC filtering is useful.

Encrypt the wifi with WPA2 (not WPA) and use a long, non dictionary encryption key, something like: 1f/3564z^$s5fg-(kd62+;'2^w73n9sg4516 and you are good to go.

WPA2 with non dictionary password has not been hacked yet and can be considered safe. If you want to say I'm wrong here, then you'll need to at least link to the evidence :)

Oh, and for the record:

SSID: wifi

Broadcast: ON

Not broadcasting the SSID and MAC filtering are useful, they do also add to security, not much, but given that nearly all security is security in depth, things like that help, things like MAC filtering, may increase the amount of time the attack needs before being able to compromise the network, making them more likely to turn their attentions else where or get caught.

I second that, at the moment I am using a ripped copy of server 03 installed on my lab just for practicing stuff I find in the MCSE book, I would love to have a legit copy so I can have it live with all patches etc... but the cost is a killer. Maybe when I am done with the books I may look at a freeBSD solution to my money problems.

Ah nice, we have a mod doing the same thing in my home state that have a massive wireless mesh grid setup, only thing is they do not provide free internet its more so a massive intranet. I may one day consider checking it out once I get a a hi gain directional antenna.

Fun thing about PSKs that include non alpha numeric charters: They brake the web interface on some routers.

Never knew that and that sure is funny!

I enjoy plausible deniability! Thats why I use WEP! Also if some one wants to steal wireless I know that they will find a way so my key is 1234567890.

But in all seriousness the wireless connections are compartmentalized from the rest of the network.

Plausible deniability will not work if the court can prove that you had the know how, but neglected to take the proper actions to secure you access point. Also they will probably find this post in your history/log, or at least link you to this account, and say, "fuck off, you dled that child porno". Trust me, people use that excuse all the time.

Also doesn't work if its illegal not to secure your AP properly.

Good for you then, I always like to here about people giving back to the community and doing a good job about it.

Personal i think its the only way 4 a hackers collective to be able 2 survive is giving something back 2 the community that they live in, so my wife and me are active foster parents (over the 22 or something years a bout 300 children have have lived with us and are cared 4, with 60 of them we still are in weekly/monthly contact).

Some of my mates and me are the ones that keeps the Free internet WiFi network up and running.

And my children with some of my other mates and me are the ones that organize every year (4 the last 4 years) a WiFi power camp(site), the people that comes 2 this event are people that want to learn how to set up a wireless network connection (WiFi/GPRS/ETC/ETC).

And so is any one thats a member of our local hackers collective got his or hears giving back 2 the community projects, and thats what keeps us surviving in this mad, mad, mad world.

Keep up the good work!

Will do.

Gerard

Mine is HotRodLincoln, although it changes regularly.

I also run WPA2 and MAC filtering.

So far this has kept the local skidies at bay. We have a bunch of them here. I do set up a honeypot for them every once in a while, and they aren't smart enough to have figured i out yet.

I'd reduce the signal strength, but I need it to reach out to the garage for when i'm working on the bike.

There are some firmwares which will allow you the desired effect but without reducing the signal strength, you also have to remember reducing the signal strength won't help much if they have a high-powered card and a good antenna.

The technique is the ap can calculate the distance to the target by timing the travel time of the packets, obviously it is an estimate but it does work, you just work out your maximum desired distance and then add a couple of meters to it. If the person is outside of this range then the router will not service them. Not matter what hardware they have got, they can't speed up the radio waves traveling.

lol F00 if it bothers you that much mate why don't ya just get a access point that supports client mode or modd a linksys with DD-WRT frimware...... Oh yeah because that would mean one less game in the collection. =P

Nice SSID btw
