joeypesci Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 I got an e-mail from MS the other day pointing to this http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library...x?ITPID=carepgm A guide to deploying windows 7 to other machines. I've followed it up until part 3 and just can't seem to get the Windows PE to work. I think their instructions are wrong. First attempt the bootmgr file was missing, which I then put in c:\winpe_x86\ISO and recreated the ISO to see if that fixed the issue, it didn't yet this is never mentioned in their guide. Now, winPE just keeps saying this: Wasted two CD's now, until I realised I could just test it in a VM :) So any ideas? Quote
Swathe Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 No body I know has had 7 working in a VM. Quote
VaKo Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 You can install windows 6.x via a USB stick by formatting it to FAT32 using diskpart (you have to mark the partition as active before it will work, don't bother fucking around with the HP usb tool, its not needed) and just copying the contents of the ISO over. Saves on optical media that way. Also, check out Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2008 for deploying Windows, far better than doing it by hand as it automates every step. You do have to hack it a little to work with Windows 7, but seeing as its basically Vista R2 it should work in the same fashion as a Vista deployment. Quote
joeypesci Posted February 15, 2009 Author Posted February 15, 2009 No body I know has had 7 working in a VM. I have. Also downloaded a pre-setup VM of Windows 7. But didn't really need it as installed it fine from Windows 7 I got off Microsoft. I'll give the other suggestions a go but would of rather got this WinPE working as I don't understand why it's not. Unless of course, MS's instructions on their guide is wrong. Quote

joeypesci Posted February 16, 2009 Author Posted February 16, 2009 EDIT-I put it didn't fix the bootmgr issue when I should of said it did. Quote
Swathe Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 The episode when they giver the "Internet" to take for her speech. The greatest show ever! Quote
digip Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 No body I know has had 7 working in a VM. Um, I actually have had a VM of Windows 7 for a few weeks now. Quote
Swathe Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 I never tried it myself to see if it would work. I though they must have been doing something wrong lol. i run it full time on my desktop, really liking it so far. Quote

One thing, will it stop working at some point or do the let you purchase/patch it to the full version without having to reinstall? I can't see installing something temporarily with all the files and programs I have and use. Thats why I have it in a VM. :) Quote
Swathe Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Well, it can be made to never expire lol. I usually try and keep my installs to a minimum and most app dont' require "installing" anyway. I only really use windows for games. My laptop running Linux handles the rest. Quote
gcninja Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Um, I actually have had a VM of Windows 7 for a few weeks now. I too did have it working VM, still do, the thing is though i heard, remember "heard", it expires in august, but the bios can be changed to fool it Quote
VaKo Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Why would you bother? The build is already dated, and by August there will probally be another beta release, maybe even an RC. Quote

I believe there is a newer beta already floating around as we speak, just not from Microsofts website. http://i.gizmodo.com/5153641/windows-7-bui...ew-enhancements Quote

Thats why I have it in a VM. :) As far as I'm aware MS have said the Beta will be able to be upgrade to the RC release, then the RC upgraded to the almost final and then that I think can be upgraded to the final. I think I'm gonna install WDM Scrap that. It turns outs copype.cmd x86 c:\winpe_x86 had failed when I first tried it, instead of creating that directory it created a file call winpe_86 which ain't right. Now I've tried it again it created it properly this time and copied everything over properly. Now the ISO is working properly. Quote
