aeturnus
I know usually you don't like to answer these questions but this is nothing malicious I just want to know the easiest was to obtain the password for a router because moved into an apartment building that has wifi included but would like to open a port so I can use torrents. so if anyone can help me does this I would appreciate it. I'm sure this has been answered somewhere else on the forums previously. But, it really depends on the router and how they have it configured. Just as a starting point, what ports does it have open? For instance, can you configure it through SSH or telnet? Or if you know what kind of router it is, that might be helpful too.
h3%5kr3w
why dont you just change the port that bittorrent uses? I like using an encrypted port, cause 99% of the time it's open, and to top it all off, it's encrypted!
RedWind
which ones are encrypted I didnt know there was ones that were
moonlit
There's no such thing as an "encrypted port", you can use any port for anything, encryption is done by the software making/receiving the connection.

TAPE
Dont know whether that is actually what you are asking for, but it shows a method of obtaining access to (my) router from scratch. http://taperulez.blip.tv/#1713889 ;)
C-S-B
Dont know whether that is actually what you are asking for, but it shows a method of obtaining access to (my) router from scratch. http://taperulez.blip.tv/#1713889 ;) Though it does make assumptions on the wireless encryption. I can assure this wouldn't be so easy with wpa.
TAPE
Would imagine that if the WiFi is provided for by the appartment building, then no problem actually getting WiFI connection, just how to see the router is different story I agree.. And more than likely not want what the appartment WiFi admins want you to do..
RedWind
its getting wifi access is not the problem the key is supplied to me but I want to open a port so I need to access the routers gui

DingleBerries
What router is it? There is a firefox extension that will tell you and usually there are other ways to find out. When i get a chance I can post some links for linksys routers. There are a few exploits that may be worth taking a look at.

shonen
Firefox extension? lol wtf? Yes dingle please do, I would be most interested. XD
DingleBerries
Should have made it a bit clearer, the extension tell you what model you are using, not the password. I take it that the OP doesnt know what type of router it is. Well I guess this doesnt do what i thought it did, oh well.
H@L0_F00
Well I've found a couple exploits for a Linksys router that reset the password on milw0rm. If you're promted for a user/password it will most likely give you a model that you can google which might get you a little farther.
Swathe
Ages ago a post on this subject would get you flamed hardcore ala hel me hax mah skool type post. Let us know how you do then seeing as it's permitted, I am interested.
digip
The owner should at least have changed the default password. Default router passwords aren't exactly hacking as much as they are common knowledge and public domain. It's pretty easy to google for them and you can go to any router manufacturers site for them as well. Still, its not cool to f*ck with someone elses equipment without their permission. You do that at your own risk. No one here condones that, but that is up to the op who posted the question to make that call. Knowledge isn't a crime, but what you do with it may be though. Brennan
yeah the router is changed from default and I don't want to change the password because when he finds out then he has to hard reboot it and then the port is closed anyway then I will have to go through that all over again, I might do that as a last resort. and you dont even need a extension all you need is the default gateway ip type it into the browser and a login screen will apear with the model number on it
