Setting up a media server?

I was just given a dell mini 9 and a 300gb wd passport external hd. Is it possible to turn this into a mini media server for me and my friends to access remotely? I've never setup a server before so i wanted this to be a a tiny project. But I have no idea where to start.

I'm just a help-desk guy I have no idea how to do these things. And the network admin at my co. has no idea how to help me with this.

I would appreciate any form of help.

I was looking at ubuntu server ed. tried to install it but I have no idea what I am doing. I wanted mac and pc users to be able to read and write to files.

Thanks alot.

cheers,

Read about Samba and network file sharing. Will it be just on LAN or over the internet? How much traffic would it see daily?

I wanted to use this as a internet server. And realistically I will not have many users during the day at all.I appreciate your help a lot.

I know this is probably small fish for you, and I really appreciate your help. My end goal is to make it far beyond help desk, and possibly a security specialist in the future.

I know I have to start at square one.

Thanks again.
