Ugly coloured box on my desktop.. win xp pro

What has changed prior to this issue? Any programs installed, misc back alley websites you visited, changed to the system, etc.

I still think its something you changed or are overlooking, but without access to the machine, its anyones guess at this point.

Here are a few.. I didnt bother reading the thread since it was already on page 2. The registry edit seems to do the trick but i do not know what has already been suggested.

Control Panel>System>Advanced>Performance Tab>Settings Button>Check "Use Drop Shadows for Icon Labels on the Desktop"

Start>Run>desk.cpl>Have the THEMES open>Pull down Menu>Select Windows XP Theme>Apply>OK

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display>Desktop>Customise Display>Web>Box under "Web pages", select all the checkboxes and click "Delete".

Next BACK UP REGISTRY Notepad>Copy/Paste Text below>SAVE>EATMYBUTT.reg

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\General]
"WallpaperFileTime"=-
"WallpaperLocalFileTime"=-

control panel>performance and maintenance>system>advanced>performance settings>adjust for best appearance>apply

Turn off the drop shadowing>right click desktop>arrange Icons>uncheck "show desktop icons"

Wait for your machine to turn them off.

Turn the icons back ON.

Start>run>cmf>regsvr32 shdocvw.dll>ENTER>regsvr32 shimgvw.dll>ENTER

BACK UP REGISTRY>Start>run>regedit>

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\

Update these values:

"NoActiveDesktop" to "1"

"ForceActiveDesktopOn" to "0"

CtlAltDel>end explorer>run explorer

WOAH do i double click on the reg backup that was made? or what this could be a silly question

ok sry about the double post!

but everything suggested hasnt worked although i thank you for your time and effort in helping me.. but i was finding that i was having other problems.. like no pictures were being displayed.. pain in the but so i am just going to re-install xp i again appologize for "waisting your time"
