Stop Harassment via AOL and pictures

Hey guys/gals,

My g/f's friend is getting some harassment from someone claiming to have pictures of her naked, and keeps bothering her, claiming to know a lot about her.

The person only talks to her through AOL instant messenger. I know there is only so much cops can do about this type of stuff.

My concern is moreso about the information this person has on her. She claims her computer is running slow, so I'm going to check it out for any viruses, spyware, etc etc. Maybe he/she's getting info from her pc.

She uses AOL to browse the internet and she doesn't know anything about computers but is very nice and doesnt deserve this.

I tried googling the AIM name the person uses, but ony came up with a website s3xintheuk dot com. (3 = e, it's not the true site.)

Is there anything I can do to find info on this person??

I'm hoping to find something on her pc I can get rid of and put an end to any more nonsense.

btw, the pictures she was sent where photoshopped pictures of her head on another persons body.

I'm goign to google her name to find out what comes up, just can't remember how to spell the last name.

PM me if you need more details, I prefer to not post anymore vital information on open pubic forums.

Thanks,

Zesty

Might I recommend formatting her machine ASAP? Might be an idea to get a new AOL screen name too.

Edit: Actually, have you considered that they might be getting this information from any social networking accounts she might have? MySpace, Facebook, Bebo, even things like Flickr can give away more than you might like but people just don't think about it.

True, she does have a myspace.

The original pictures, one's her face were cropped from, weren't from her displaying them on a social network or own website, it was her old friend (who is also in the picture with her). She ran a website, so actually one suspicion is that it could be her old friend, but that's tough to prove b/c she is in japan right now.

I will find out if she has any other networking sites that is providing the person with information about her that she put up there.

I am pretty sure I wont be formatting her machine, but cleaning it up. I do not have the time nor the allowance to do so since it's her family pc. (her and her mother)

I will tell her when everything is said and done, to get another screen name. and make sure not to post it up online.

thanks.

Malteago would be better for the profiling but tbh your better off contacting her ISP and having them investigate. Chances are that screename has been registered legitimately and it would have been done so using his address.

If you get the police involved and have them escalate this I should imagine the response would be very fast indeed.

Get her to change her AIM screen name and if she's really worried about her privacy format her PC & tell her not to post pictures on public networking sites in the future.

Getting the Police involved is probably over the top at this point, seems like some bored kid to me.

She is more worried about the computer being slow and that person doing something with the pictures. She has a job where she works with children.. if that got out, she could lose her job.

She's afraid to totally cut off all contact for he might slash back at her.

I told her to save any and all conversations he has with her.

It's possible that the person has a worm on her computer and is using it to transfer files, but in that case she'd have to have naked pictures of herself on her computer, either that or she'd have to have uploaded naked pictures to the internet.

As far as loosing your job goes; I don't know where an attacker would put pictures of a girl naked to attract enough attention to get her fired from her job IRL.

I'm pretty sure you can't loose your job for having your PC infected with a virus. If she did get fired for it then simple sue the employer for un-fair dismissal.

Just cut off contact with the 'attacker' before it gets out of control, format the PC, install some decent AV software & tell her to create a new screen name.

Because of the response you gave, I will again STRONGLY recommend formatting the machine. Not only is it likely to speed up the machine, it's quicker, easier and safer than trying to pick out the crap. You never know when a machine is clean after an infection and this seems like an occasion where you really need to be sure. Of course, if the machine shows no signs of infection then reinstalling is probably overkill but don't skip out on it just because.

i agree with moonlit on this. but if your still unwilling to reformat then gather as much info on the guy as you can and send it to your isp. it is illegal to do the stuff he is as it qualifies as sexual harassment among other things. unless you live in a very nice area chances are the police wont do anything. but your isp should.

I will def. try to persuade her mother into allowing me to do so.

Thanks for all the help and I will talk to her tomorrow night about what I feel she needs to do to end this.

I'll add another vote for a reformat, but before you do that see if you can have a hunt around the system for anything nasty. Given the users technical ability I would strongly recommend working out what has happened before you get rid of the evidence. If you don't, the same thing is likely to happen again if this is a result of a comprimise.

You also need to educate her about safer browsing habits, teach her how to keep her AV and AM systems in order, how to use a basic firewall etc. Just a basic 101 in computer safety, nothing fancy, just enough to keep her on the right track. You should also do this with her Mom as they are both using the same box.

Doesn't AIM have a block function at all? And surely they have an abuse dept? She should cut off all contact with the person immediately, further interaction will only inflame the situation. I know she is worried about stuff like the fake nudie pics getting out or worse, but if she manages the information release properly she can turn anything they do against them. If she tries to keep it on the down-low then they have something to use against her, but make it known that there is some freak stalking her and they have nothing on her any more.

Lastly, if she is in a position where pornographic images of her could cost her job, then she should consider going to the cops anyway. I know there is fuck all they can do, but having that stuff on record will again take away anything the stalker has that could hurt her career. If they do manage some masterful reveal that puts her in a bad position then straight away she could go "yeah, see this police report and this copy of the email I sent to HR and my boss about it back in 2008...".

Ok, Ive been lurking the forum for a while now, but this finally made me register. I agree with every ones advice on reformatting and learning about secure internet use.

Buuuut

This isnt your fault, you changing wont stop this guy, the harasser needs to be brought to justice. Therefore you should report this to the police, but first you need to insure they have enough evidence to do something.

1. make sure you have logs of the conversations

2. establish his identity. (this is where I'm surprised no one else on this forum offered suggestions!!)

-the best way for you to establish his identity is to get his IP address. Luckily AOL, and I am assuming by extension you are using AIM, provides an easy way of getting this. You need to "direct connect" with the harasser. It will take a little social engineering, but probably not much. (just off the top of my head, tell him you will send him more nude pictures if he promises to leave you alone.) Once you have established a direct connection with him, open cmd, then telnet

===ok guys I need a little help here, its literally been years since I played with this, there is a command to list your computers connections===

From there you can see a list of the connections and AIM will be labeled clearly, I forget exactly how, but it is obvious.

You can copy and paste that list, or print-screen. Whatever, just get a hard copy.

Also print a hard copy of the chat transcripts, and if you are comfortable with it, even the 'shopped nudes.

Once you have all of this evidence collected, report it to the police. They will very easily be able to find out who this is from his ISP, and with this concrete evidence the police will take you more seriously and also be able to act much more quickly.

In my opinion its important to stop people who do things like this, if he wasn't harassing your friend, chances are he would be doing the same thing to someone else. If it does turn out to just be some dumb kid the legal system will take that into account, but they will learn an important lesson from this.

I hope I helped and I hope this situation is resolved quickly and favorably!!

it's tough, im willing to help out, but things in life delayed any intervention in awhile. school, vacation, car accident.

im a helping hand, but i can't force them to let me help them.

thanks for the input though!!! I will def. try that and could get some info like that with a convo.

Just a heads up, If you get the police involved they can contact AIM and request information about the account.

Back in High school some kid said that he received a bomb threat over AIM. He printed off a log of the conservation and gave it to the school authorities. They passed it on the police then Contacted AIM. Turns out that both accounts were created from the same computer. The kid was expelled and was no longer able to attend any school in the district ever again.

Another thought, Read the AIM Terms Of Service, I'm fairly cretin what the person is doing is in violation of this. You might be able to go somewhere from that.

yea, I have no urgency anymore with the situation, but i'd like to make sure her pc is alright and there isn't anything on there that shouldn't.

Best options is to buy a new hhd and clean install, other than that you can nuke it and reinstall... Just "scanning" it isnt going to do much.
