W4RP3D
Tesco, a the biggest and most powerful supermarket chain in the Uk (dont no if they have them in the US) have said they are going to start a PC price war with other companys. Ive been thinking about this and how it would effect people this is what i think: The main advantage is oviously cheap hardware but then again this could mean low quality crap. The disadvantage is that there would be more n00bs a round and more newbies which is i suppose pretty good for who ever is in the system repair business but could also be very annoying. Also the people that would be selling the PC's wouldnt be as clued up as a specialised store. So what do you guys think?
Sparda
Will they be selling Windows with these computers?
stingwray
I've seen them have some sub £400 Acer laptops in there with not to bad a spec for the price. wouldn't buy one though as they of course are all Intel. Plus I think you really want to buy components etc. from people who know what they are and what they do. (Unlike the people in dixons who were trying to push an Apple laptop on me and told me it was the new MacBook Pro when it had iBook G4 written underneath the screen, and then after I corrected them they tried to tell me I was wrong). cooper
Here in the Netherlands the Medion multimedia PCs made quite a name for themselves that way. They're sold at a number of large super markets, and typically are made of: - A low-end current generation processor - A medium to high-end graphics card - No-name memory - A standard motherboard - An expansion card that slots into one of those proprietary MoBo slots (CNR?) - A cardreader that eats just about any type of card around - A decent CD/DVD player - A decent CD/DVD burner - A cheap-ass case that looks it - Keyboard, mouse and speakers, all crappy. - A legal copy of XP Home edition pre-installed Note that the system comes WITHOUT a monitor (but they typically offer some fine combo-deals for some decent LCD screens). My parents got one after they came to me and I was simply unable to make a similar-spec machine for the same amount of money. When you look at the stuff the machine is advertised to do, 95% is there because of that expansion card. But since the target audience is expected to run Windows anyways, and buy a new machine when this one dies in a couple of years, nobody cares, really. Basically, it's a damned good deal if you want a full computer. If you want to strip it for parts to enhance your own rig, either buy new parts or ditch your current rig for this machine, maybe keeping your own case, mouse, keyboard and speakers though. We were all n00bs once, and we've all done stupid things, asked stupid questions and annoyed people online. Cheap computers just opens up the advantages we have now to people who otherwise wouldn't have been able to afford them.
Rocold
The disadvantage is that there would be more n00bs a round Aren't you being just a little elitist? We were all n00bs once, and we've all done stupid things, asked stupid questions and annoyed people online. We are all still n00bs at something. No one here knows everything about computers and technology. Is it a disadvantage to have you around? Plus just because someone gets a cheap computer doesn't mean they want to become a hacker. Most the people i know think that the only thing the internet is for is ebay, email, and pron.
