  1. Hi everybody, I just recently discovered HAM radio. I haven't gotten my license yet but I'm studying for it. Meanwhile, I've been doing some research as to setting up my base station. My goal is to be able to transmit and receive on VHF and UHF bands, and HF would also be great but is not necessary. As I did my research, I realized that there are many routes to my goal, but the ones I've found are very expensive. I am looking for something under 300 dollars, preferably 200, including antenna, transceiver, coax, key, microphone and anything else that is necessary. It would be great if any of you know where to get this stuff for cheap or have any advice in general about this. Anyway, Thanks! P.S. If hak5 is not the right place to post this, please tell me immediately and I'll move the topic to another site. I would hate to be a nuisance. I just really loved the responsive and helpful community here.
  2. So you've got the Radio bug? Want to learn more? http://www.hamtests.co.uk Covers both exams in USA and UK, tutorials and practise papers, so you can acquire a HAM license. Currently the cheap RTL-SDRs only receive data so this might not be for everyone. But if you want to learn everything about Radio this is the starting point.... a HAM license will permit you to transmit data/signals (restrictions apply). I think this is useful for all those budding Hack-RF users out there!
  3. Hi I'd like to have info concerning the frequency generator of the pineapple (is it a simple "multiplied" local oscillator like WRT54Gxx, is it a more sophisticated DDS, where could I download the schematic of the router). In other words, how is frequency driven the pineapple and how could it be hacked Thus for a simple reason : The output power of the Pineapple is perfect for what I intend to do, but I need to change it's working frequency far lower than the first channel. To avoid answers "out of the subject" (concerning FCC regulation and other things like that), I should precise that this hack is totally legual in my country (France, Region 1) and with my radio licence class. the purpose of this hack is to use the pineapple in a ham radio Hamnet mesh network. Most of the hackable routers we can buy in Europe have a far lower output power Tnks Marc
  4. Does anyone know if there are any benefits for wifi radio/gear if you have a general ham operator license? Can I legally use higher dbm wifi radios or anything like that? I've heard that I can send packets through ham bands, but the FCC doesn't like encryption so that's a bit of a bummer.
