  1. Hello everyone. First post on here so bear with me. I am a cyber security student trying to learn to use kali and linux in general, and I have a problem with wifi. I have dual booted Kali with windows 8.1, and I cannot use the internet when I boot into kali. I get an ip address from my router's dhcp, I can ping addresses outside the network, like 8.8.8.8, but I cannot connect to any web pages. I need to connect while I work on kali for school work. Anybody know whats going on? Thanks in advance.
  2. Hey everybody. I am new to this forum but not new to Hak5 (love the show). It has been some time since I played with Backtrack (now Kali Linux -- has it been that long for me? hah) and toyed with the basics using my home network as a guinea pig :-D I live in an apartment complex and am starting to wonder if my home network might be the target of some tomfoolery... Trying not to sound too paranoid here but I've been noticing more red flags lately.... it is probably nothing... but it is probably time for me to give the home network a health checkup :-) I was just wondering if someone could point me in the right direction of which tools to use, where to start, etc. using the latest version of Kali I know a good place to start is testing the security of my wifi encryption (TKIP & AES) and passphrase... but after this I am kind of stumped as to what else I should check for. Thanks guys! Happy to be here. Hope to get to know some of you! Cheers.

  4. Dear Hak5, I am desperately trying to install Kali Linux on my mid 2010 macbook pro. Basicly what I want to do is to install the iso on an external harddrive wich has 2 partitions. The first one is for my regular data and the second one is ment for Kali. I red on the kali page that the best way to do it is to use the unix 'dd' command: so what I did is: sudo dd if=kali-linux.iso of=dev/disk2s3 bs=1m After 10 minutes of copying the files I got a message that all the files were copied. I tried to boot it up with and without refind but got the same error: no bootable device, press any key... I mounted the disk to see if the files were copied but could only mount the first partition. The second partition wich contained the kali files could not be mounted. Disk utility gave the following error: I cant repair the disk because this also prompts an error wich states that I should restore or erase the disk. some other facts: -I tried Unetbootin, didnt work. prompted error: no bootable device, press any key... -I tried a usb stick with 16gb ram, FAT, same error -I tried to run it with vmware fusion, got it up and running but could not get my awus036nh to work in bridged mode. And im sure I tried some other things that I cant remember at the moment...running out of options. Any help would be appreciated!
  5. Had problems tethering my pineapple and using wifi at the same time in kali. here is how i fixed it 1. right click network icon, select edit connections 2.select wired connection 1 and edit 3.select ipv4 settings 4. press the button that says Routs 5.check the box that says "use this connection for resources on its own network" 6. press ok and run mp5 ( run wp5 with ./wp5.sh) i had problems with sh wp5.sh Hope this helps someone
  6. So I followed the Hak5 instructions to the letter but my pineapple is unable to connect to the internet (using the Shop IP function) Mr-Protocol advised me to disable "Connect Automatically" in the "Wired" Connections in the Network Manager (If that made no sense watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sn3wKNVhqz4) But to no avail. The script isn't giving me any errors. Any suggestions? PS! I'm Running Linux Mint
  7. Hey guys, I'm new to the hacking scene, been doing small tests like using metasploit, imbedding meterpreter sessions and ssh'ing into machines for fun. But I've recently focused on Wi-Fi hacking, and been having alot of fun with it. But however, I've come across this one hash that does not want to go down. No matter how many wordlists I throw at it, not matter how many different combination rules I throw at it, this hash REFUSES to bite the bullet and just give in. So, like any responsible penetration tester, I've decided to turn to the group's forum that got me interested in hacking in the first place. If anyone wants to try their hand at cracking it, I can send it via Skype, just ask for my contact info. Thanks!
  8. So i have searched a bit on the subject and have yet to find a definitive answer, maybe its my lack of google fu or just laziness. Anyway I am starting to get into virtualization specifically a hypervisor. I think I am going the route of Xen as I already have a NAS running UnRAID 5. So I came to the logical conclusion I should just upgrade to UnRAID 6 because it has an option for Xen. Question: When using a hypervisor and setting up a server cluster do the CPU of each server have to match? Or is this only needed if you plan on moving the VM's from one server to another? Thank you in advance for any Information. Also can anyone recommend a good firewall? As I am running an AP\ Firewall (ASUS), and would like to upgrade to something more substantial. I remember there were a few segments about smoothwall, monowall, ect. just wanted to see what the community uses.
  9. Hi all, I did not see a thread pertaining specifically to the distros or for that matter OS's that we use. The last time I hands on used linux was in 2000 in a business environment. I basically bluffed my way into the position as the owner was riding the Hype train for red hat. He didn't even know how to use it but wanted it as part of his infrastructure. I was a 16 yo drop out who basically said fuck yeah I'll try and make it do something for $350 a week LOL. After that, I did not actually have much of a thing for linux, I appreciated its Efficiency but it came with alot of shit I just did not need installed or even available to me. And how the #! do you install an application lol. I could not understand why we could not just have installers like a damn windows box. I mean talk about shell elitism "real men use command line" . Anyway, I have been watching and learning quietly in the background, since have played with fedora and open SUSE, and Debian naturally, but the question begs.. I am seeing alot of very polished looking distros now that are minimalist in nature and so forth with the likes of Elementary OS and CrunchBang standing out for me. I simply ask, Is there any real core function one is missing out on by using one of these distros as opposed to installing for example, vanilla Debian if you will ? Or is as simple as "Here I'm Debian, Ubuntu whatever full-blown with everything installed use me" or "Hi im #! not much on me but you can add what you like im still Debian at my core" ??? Kind regards, Sinn3rman.
  10. I was wanting to get into looking at Bluetooth penetration testing, but I couldn't figure out how to bridge the Bluetooth adapter through Virtual Box into the OS; it keeps saying no Bluetooth device found. Anyone know how?

  12. Hello guys, So my question is how old where u guys when u started learning linux and hacking? Because im 16 now and i started 3 weeks ago and i wanted to know if its a good age to learn it or am i too late? Seeya!
  13. I recently used bleachbit to clean my Ubuntu 14.04 system. It came up with 5 errors. This has never happened before. There are some files I could not delete do to lack of permission. If I'm root I can do whatever I want right? Maybe not. I tried to chown them and chmod but this only worked with one of the files I was trying to delete. One of the files is in /root/tmp/ and seems to change it's name every time I run the cleaner. I'm not really sure what that's about. Can anyone point me in the way of figuring out how to change the file permissions or users on the files so I can delete them? Here's an example of one of the error messages. E: Could not open lock file /var/cache/apt/archives/lock - open (13: Permission denied) E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied) Clipboard 0 Exception while running operation 'system': '[Errno 13] Permission denied: '/proc/1502/fd/0'' [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/proc/3243/oom_score_adj' [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/root/tmpt4sg66ANKTWYtvt2wymcbW USu0Iy eqOReD6w7fpaiQ11ejLN3b3xx0HJx rqG4i5t0HQ3onM7yseJYjpM.DgwPtPpbjE8cHpO.N2oVsy3IS1q ua5k YkJSNn SYvN19kB.n1th-3XutMhFkNC R8Q8t.eqWSpqc.Bdc3gtCJZl0MHTLZ2ifGhV34GBlmbEhZ50lt _wWaw-XFZowp JCGk09uHiUssFoPBPj4U1nGSAe1qFJYfyTnbLk' Disk space recovered: 0 Files deleted: 0 Special operations: 1 Errors: 5

    Linux Question

So the hard drive on my 2008 macbook air died and I plan on getting a new one in the near future. I don't want to reinstall the original OS but instead a linux distro. I wanted to install Ubuntu on it but would that work? What bit would I use if so, 32 or 64? Thanks!
  15. I wrote a guide. It's pretty much finished besides the bad HTML. It's available at: https://sites.google.com/site/dump1090qld If I helped you....Consider donating some doge/ltc/btc via the addresses on that page. Thanks, p00r white guy.
  16. Linux Depending on your architecture it should be available within your package-manager, maybe me should pad this out in following posts below? As of Kali 1.0.5 it should be installed by default. http://www.kali.org/news/kali-linux-software-defined-radio-support/ OSX Either download the software from this website GQRX or if you have macports: port install gqrx Mac ports is preferred is it will install all necessary dependancies! like: gnuradio and gr-osmosdr (drivers for RTLSDR) It should then appear within Applications! Very point and click orientated - very easy to use. EDIT: You can also use brew instead of macports; but I'm more familiar with macports!
  17. Just received the SDR kit from the Hakshop and had two questions: 1.) The RTL unit when plugged into the USB drive is EXTREMELY hot. Is this normal for this hardware? 2.) The device is not recognized in a full install of kali (tried lsusb command to verify). Kali's full install appears to have the sdr drivers installed. Is there something else that must be done for the device to be recognized?
  18. Hey does anyone have a idea if you could make a WiFi pineapple like device out of a computer running a Linux os
  19. Hi, I just got this rubber ducky. I have watched all the videos and read about a dozen topics and I don't see a single video showing someone dragging and dropping a payload onto the usb and booting it. Not one. But that's exactly what Darren says you can do to get this up and running. I used the generator, put together something- nothing. So, I decided to do a custom script, simple code: DELAY 3000 GUI R DELAY 200 STRING notepad ENTER DELAY 200 STRING Hello World!!! ENTER This should be simple enough? Doesn't require directories or anything. Still nothing. The only thing I haven't done is drop this in using Linux. But why the heck would I have to boot up linux just to drop this inject file on the drive?? What am I missing. Ugh. So frustrated. I've tried it on 2 machines now as well. This should be straight forward. Use generator, create code, drag on sd card. Well- okay, maybe my drive is too large? Is that possible? I moved the binary inject file to a 16GB card? Don't see why that would hurt though. If I'm copying target computer files I want space? And even if I get this up and running, I still have another question. In the generator.. it says "usb name: (ducky)" _______ ? If we're suppose to name it ducky to go along with various pre-written code.. why would it ask the question? And, is the answer just written in normal format or is it like, "/ducky", does lower-case matter, etc? Because at first when I did a more complicated script I thought this was going to be the problem. Heeeelp! Thanks, Morgan
  20. Hi all, I was wondering if any1 here knows some hardware with the following requirements: Has to be able to run linux os Needs 2 ethernet ports ( 100Mb is enough ) Pref sd card or usb for OS Low power consumption Basicly its to make a small router. The best i could find is a Mirabox. But its still a bit to pricy for my needs ( dont need wifi + bluetooth ) Any leads for other hardware is welcome. kind regards, GuardMoony
  21. Hi, I'm trying the site cloner from se-toolkit but got a problem for using it external.. On LAN it works fine but I want to use it for external networks. I port forwarded port 80 to my external IP and set up the site cloner with my external IP but I can't connect to it. Why is this?
  22. Ok, Most of you people probably came a cross this before. Trying to configure a new linux and getting nowhere just because SELinux is enabled. So i taught lets ask some questions to the hak5 community and see what they think of SELinux. ( Not going in to the topic if its more secure :p ) What is the standpoint of you guys on SELinux ( Good, Bad, Only made to annoy people, ... )? Do you make use of it? Did you ever wrote rules for this? Do you use it in combination of self compiled software? In witch scenario do you use it? If you got some questions yourself, Feel free to add em.
  23. Hey guys! Ok so here's the lateset: I'm building a PXE server with int0x80! I've been following his video note for note, word for word. But when I try to boot from my laptop, I get a nice error: " No DHCP or proxy DHCP offers were found or received" Am I forgetting or missing a step in a file configuration? or is it as simple as port forwarding?
  24. Hello, I would love your guys opinion on a good distribution for learning linux. Beyond the basic ones like mint, ubuntu and debian. Ok so I have been using Ubuntu (main os) and Debian (Raspberry Pi) for a year and a bit, and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I want to move on to something else and was thinking of Arch Linux. I quite like the idea of starting with a minimal system and building it up. I just have a question for any Arch users. How often do you get upgrades or packages that break your system? If you have any suggestions for a good os for learning they would be thoroughly appreciated. Cheers
