  1. I've been using Cobian Backup, http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm
  2. Could you remote in to a PC? That might be the easiest thing to do.
  3. The iPad is a big iPod Touch. If that's what you are looking for, then get it. If you are expecting a tablet computer, then you are wrong. It doesn't have multitasking, it doesn't have Flash support, no removable battery, and you have to buy apps through the app store. My opinion, this isn't that great of a product. I was expecting more from Apple, but I wouldn't waste my money on it. I say save your money and wait to see what comes out later this year. There are suppose to be some other tablet/media devices in the works that aren't Apple controlled.
  4. Here are the apps I suggest: Mobile Defense - Remote tracking of your cell phone if it's lost or stolen PandaHome - Home screen replacement, gives you alot more features like more home screens Meebo IM - Instant messaging app. The only one I've found that works with my company's Jabber server. It's free and the best mobile IM app I've used so far. If you use Meebo.com then this app syncs with that website. CalWidget - Great calendar widget to replace the default one. I love it cause it combines my corporate calendar and my personal calendar in one view. Evernote - I love Evernote and this is the Android app if you use it. ShopSavvy - Bar code scanner that checks online and local prices (I also have Barcode Scanner, but Shopsavvy has more features) ActionComplete - To-do list manager. Follows the Getting Things Done methodology if you're into that. I've tried 2 others, and this one works better for me. Also has location awareness, so you can assign a task with a location and AC will notify you when you are there. (I turned off that feature to save battery) TasKiller - one of the better task killing apps. I like it because of the widget it has. The Great Land Grab - neat little GPS game Twidroid - Twitter app Aloqa - nice app to find places around you. Great if you travel Where - another app similar to Aloqa Places Directory - similar to Aloqa but I think it's Google's app The Weather Channel NewsRob - Great RSS reader that syncs with Google Reader. If you use Google Reader, get this app. It's the best one I've found so far Movies - Great app for finding info about movies playing in theaters Google Goggles - Neat concept, but doesn't work that great. Still fun to show off to friends I also use Documents To Go (paid app) to view/edit MS Office documents.
  5. Currently my main interest is Lord of the Rings Online. Trying to get some things done before the next expansion. I'm also working on the original Diablo during lunch hour. A few other games I've played in the past couple of months are: CoD4 (PC version), Fable, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Dungeon Siege, and Tibia.
  6. I bought an M3-miniSD over a year ago and love it. You have to use a PassCard in the DS slot. The only down side I have is the device fits in the GBA slot and sticks out a little, but it really doesn't bother me any. D, does the M3 Simply play GBA files?
  7. How did I know this question would come up? Basically for two major reasons: 1) our main IT dept is a Windows shop and 2) the software we use is built on the .NET framework so to do some of the integrations I plan to do will require me to use their API. The vendor only supports VB/VBA and VB.NET. I've seen plenty (and use some personally) PHP based CMS and other web apps, but to get a server with PHP setup is going to be too hard to push through my IT department. But even if I had an Apache server with a PHP based CMS I would be stuck with the vendor's API. I'm not saying I couldn't figure out a way to use PHP and their API, but if something came up they wouldn't support me (answer any questions I have) with PHP code. Simply put, I'm trying to save me some time and headache of developing a "platform" for these applications I need to build.
  8. I'm looking for a good free (hopefully, open source) ASP.NET CMS software. Does anyone have any suggestions on any? I'm looking for likes/dislikes, pro/cons, etc. of the different ones. Would like it to be VB.NET based but I'll take C#. More detail: I'm starting to build an Intranet for my department and instead of starting from scratch, I was wondering if there was a CMS, or other platform, that will do what I need already built/started. Mainly what I want the CMS for is user/group security, simple static page creation, etc., which could be in some other "platform" so it doesn't have to be a CMS app. The other requirements is it has to be modifiable so I can create the custom apps and modules I need for my department. Sharepoint has a lot of features that I need, but it costs too much, and honestly is over kill for our purposes. I've just started researching this and I have found a few open source ASP.NET CMS systems, but I haven't found a good site that has reviewed them or offers a pro/con comparisons. A few I've found are DotNetNuke, AxCMS.net, and umbraco. Over the next week I will be checking into these further, but I'm asking if anyone has been in this situation before if they would offer up their experiences.
  9. I just built a home server a few months ago with 1TB RAID5 storage. I bought four Samsung 500GB SATA hard drives (model HD501LJ). The drives have a 4 out of 5 stars with 810 reviews on Newegg. com. I also bought a Highpoint RocketRAID 1740 PCI RAID card to do the RAID5 configuration. I was limited by the mobo to a PCI slot. So far the drives have worked just fine, and I've even purchased two more to replaced the failed 160GB drive. Here is a little more detail about my server: Main purpose was file storage and MythTV backend. I wanted data redundancy which is why I chose RAID5. I decided to use four drives, Maxtor 160GB HD for OS and MythTV, three Samsung 500GB for storage only. The RocketRAID card is not a true hardware RAID but it met the criteria: low cost, PCI, SATA RAID5, Linux drivers. I used Ubuntu 7. 04 64-bit command-line install (alternative download) so it could be headless. All-in-all, the server worked fine (some great documentation on how to install a backend only MythTV server), although I had to compile the RocketRAID drivers and had a little trouble but in the end, it was a simple fix. The fourth 500GB drive is for a backup in case one of the RAID5 drives dies. Recently the old 160GB finally died, or should I say on it's way to dying. It still runs, but Linux will crash after a while, and the click of death is starting. So I decided to purchase two more Samsung 500GB drives in hopes to do a mirror RAID for the OS and MythTV recordings. (I was filling up the 160GB with TV recordings anyways) Little did I know, my mobo doesn't do a real hardware RAID therefore it won't work. So I'm using the spare drive as an external storage drive. I also upgraded to Ubuntu 7. 10 64-bit. Future plans for the server are a web based BitTorrent client and media cataloger/streamer.
