Well I haven't posted on this forum in a while, since I last spoke to Harrison (not sure if he's still doing stuff with Darren etc. as I know he only did a few episodes in season 1) - Dave (Mr Grim) linked me to this topic and thought I'd post and say it was me and a couple of other people who did the record attempt. We had a lot of fun doing it, and yup, I reckon we could've done it for much longer had Johnny not decided to use his breaks for playing WoW each day (something about getting an achievement/medal etc. for it) and then falling asleep on Sunday morning :(. Trystan is thinking of doing a 100 hour stint on Left 4 Dead 2 to break the record for longest time playing any video game, which *is* pretty hardcore...the guy was up for 66 hours before he had any sleep when we did the marathon, and he hadn't even had any caffine, the guy is a machine...

I've been posting for a while, I guess this post is just a way of apologising for my lack of posting, I read loads of threads with a lot of interest but hate posting for the sake of it, and rarely have the knowledge to contribute to many threads, prefering to soak up the knowledge instead ;). I'll try and go on IRC more I think... So anyhow, for those of you that have seen my posts flitting around recently, I'll speak to you all again soon on IRC :).

Well, I'm not sure how these arguments perpetuate really-at the end of the day, if you're in a country and break their laws (no matter whether you agree with them or not) you can't moan when you get nailed for it. You live in that country, therefore it's their balls, their game. If however, you're ok with breaking the law and you never get caught doing it, then it's only you that you have to answer for, no-one else. End of. Right, as to whether a real man can cry-yes, he can :). However, Chuck Norris makes a woman out of a man if he catches them crying. Chuck Norris never cries.

Well I guess it's a new craze therefore they just exploited it for the extra audience thrill. I just see free running as gymnastics+running anyhow-all of the local people who do it come to gymnastics and practise the same thing everyone else does-flips/somersaults/turns etc.

I've heard nothing but good things about this movie-more gritty/realistic, david craig fitting the role very well, and also the added bonus of the appearance by the free runnning guy from district 13 (as far as I'm aware)!

I think this idea could all go horribly wrong when the crew have a drunken gathering and leave the cameras on...

Actually, I summarized that thread into a Hacking page on the Hak.5 Wiki. Was about to suggest the same...I looked at that list and ended up listening to This Week in Tech (TWiT) and also Security Now as a result, which I find most informative and interesting.

Fox News are very well known in my line of work for being a joke as a sorce of reliable media. I think this is something else that gives weight to this opinion.

I had heard of that also (the flying around with thermal imaging cameras) but I think they just do it as an easy way of finding out who the miscreants are, rather than because people have secret rooms specifically. if someone wanted to hide their stash it'd be rather easy I imagine, they'd just have to reduce the temperature of the room to a level that'd go unseen by the thermal imaging cameras.

If it was broadcasted as an advert, you could set this argument out in a complaint to the relevant broadcasting standards authority.

I thought that the reason North Korea is seen as current news (rather than Iran) is due to North Korea already having the facilities for nuclear weapon development, and have developed weapons. However, iran have not developed their nuclear weapons programme to such a level that it's become an immediate threat to anyone. Hence America jumping all over Iran, more so than North Korea-they're trying to nip iran in the bud before they become a problem, whereas North Korea are just threat limitation so to speak. At least that's how I saw it all...

I guess I'll be the responsible adult and just say that if you get drunk the night before an important daytime activity the next time, you deserve to get a hangover ;).

Yup, it's what the American Marines tend to say when initiated into the marines, so to speak. I don't know much about it, not being an American soldier. I also don't see the point to it, but I did like both of those films, and the take on the quote for the wiki :).

You laugh, I had a chemistry teacher back in HS that did use one of those to change his powerpoint slides for him. He managed to mod the bird so that the water traveling path was a bit longer and thus took longer for the bird to swing. He had it to an approximent 20 sec/rotation. Perfect timing for a PP lecture. Needless to day, the man was a lazy genius. And had a sense of humour also it seems! I'll bear this idea in mind when I do my PhD presentations over the course of the next 3 years!

I rather think that the key to preventing this has been found really. The sole concept relies on the ability of the USB switchblade to be auto-run, else no-one's playing ball. So a simple utility to turn off auto-play will work wonders, and be very simple in concept. However, as the above has pretty much been stated already, I'm wondering if there's a counter-counter measure to this? If it can't be auto-run is there some other way of operation? For example, forcing the system to auto-play? I am interested myself as I'm not very knowledgeable on this front.

I think this is a topic covered briefly in Steve Gibson's Security Now podcast, episode 28 I think, titled ethernet insecurity. He mentions the mutual connection of two seperate networks to each other, I didn't have a look at the transcript for the episode but he mentioned in the podcast that there's diagrams etc. there.

I reckon that a level headed supervisor/techie wouldn't mind about someone running folding@home as long as it was only done to co-incide with late night-time hours, when no-one uses the computers anyhow. I was thinking of suggesting this to my supervisor as our comp lab of 15 ish computers is locked up at night with no-one ever using them-we all have 24 hour access to the main computer network anyhow, if generic work needs to be done. As I'm a member of the Cardiff University chemical biology group, it'd demonstrate some personal value to the leader I would hope!

I think that most electrical products have a system whereby they disperse the excess voltage, in case of a power source drawing upon more power than is expected. This protection system only works untill a certain threshold is reached, whereby the device would then be fried I imagine. But I also imagine this would have to be a relatively large amount of power for it to do this. Or would would logically think so anyhow...

I imagine you could use something like http-tunnel (in conjuction with Sockscap in some instances) to bypass the port blocking, if it exists.
