  1. Apparently, I'm the Dorky High Nerd....
  2. This seems to be the solution http://brunoabinader.blogspot.com/2008/05/...ardy-heron.html
  3. Hmm, take a large axe to it and... Oh wait, that's a "hacked" laptop.... My bad.
  4. Is this running on an Acer Aspire? I'm having a similar issue with my Ubuntu 8.04 install and from what I'm reading, the MadWifi drivers should fix it.
  5. More public institutions are moving this way. However, at least they usually separate the unprotected computers from the main network. Most often, they are on a dedicated net connection and a basic wifi router. Part of it is cost and maintenance. The employees of libraries and the like are usually not very computer savvy, so they have no idea how to fix something if it goes out of config. For budget reasons, they usually don't have a dedicated admin either. I know this because my business used to serve a few local libraries and community centers. When I took the contracts they were very specific that it would be dedicated public access, and no security was added. They didn't even want me to change the default passwords on the routers. I know it's stupid, but you can't budge those political types. I spent a lot of time re-imaging machines for them. Oh well, their money in my pocket lets me spend more on things I want...
  6. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot??? Anyhow, to the OP, I've had great luck with WPA, even in an area that is highly populated with WiFi and highly wardriven. So, WPA, MAC filter, and make sure you have set the router password to something hard. If he can get passed that, then have some fun with Airpwn, and some others, and show him not to mess with you.
  7. Consoles- Wii, XB360, Dreamcast, N64, SNES, NES, PSP Gaming computers... Um, there are 13 machines running in this house right now... 10 of them can run most modern games. My wife does the PC thing more than I do anymore. Her rig is an eMachines W3507 that's been upgraded. 450w PS, 3.2ghz P4, 1 gb RAM(needs more), and an Intuit 1gb 8600GT, on XP Media Center. My MAIN machine is a system my company built, with a Q6600, 2gb RAM, XFX 512mb 8800GT, 600w PS, and XP Pro. honestly though, I rarely game. This one is used more for web dev and other business related debauchery...err... tasks...
  8. In front of my old apartment.
  9. I had a customer contact me about helping him with a site he is putting together. He wants to take credit card subscriptions and allow a userid and password to be created. Basically, customer chooses their subscrption, fills out the form, creates a username and password, and then inputs their credit card info. Once the card is authorized for the charge, it would open up the userid for access. I've done shopping cart systems on a product basis, but never set up anything for a subscription basis that would talk back to the username database. What would you web guru's suggest for setting this up?
  10. So, I'm installing a system in my SHO-car(pun intended, it's a '93 SHO), and I want to be able to use a connection via wifi as well. What I am thinking is to be ale to use my laptop off my tethered EVDO connection if I'm at a camp ground or something. So I would have the cell tethered to the computer in the car, and have it able to run wifi out. I could use a PSP, iPod Touch, or any other device while at the camp ground(we do a lot of camping when we can). What I would like is to have the wired network cable run out to the WAN port on an old router I have, and bridge the connections. I could go for the USB adapter(actually have a hacked Nintendo dongle), but it's a lot slower. Is there a way I could do this?
  11. I'm probably the one to blame for the Vista usage..lol Laptop came with it, and I haven't had time to upgrade to XP and Sabayon dual boot yet.
  12. It must also have never been used previously. Yup, sorry, forgot that part. I was doing the ASSume thing again..lol. I just ASSumed that he would be buying the OEM copy for the customer, which is what I do.
  13. You'll be fine. As long as you are giving them the license key, and original CD, and not using it on another system, you are fine. By doing the work on the system and not being the owner of said system, you are considered a refurbisher/builder. The idea behind the OEM stuff is to cut the shops a break on price so they can sell it at a retail price or bundle it with a system/rebuild. I've spent a lot of time on the phone with Microsoft trying to figure out their EULA's myself, since I'm a system builder. When I started I wanted to make sure my customers wouldn't be seeing any grief from any of my vendors, M$ especially.

  15. I came up with a few more things that it will do. I think instead of finding a start relay, I'm going to try to tie the relay into the security system, and find a way for them to talk. That way I could use the remote functions of the system through the network. Things like, window conrol function(oops, left windows open..+up+), remote start, keyless entry, and arm/disarm. The other advantage with this is I would be able to pull the car in the garage for the night, and download an datalogging I had saved from tuning, or upload and download music. A few of us have our music drives set up so that computers with permission to be on our networks can use the music and movies on our network drives. Well, say I pull up to a friends house so we can gocruising. He wants to bring some tunes.. I just log on, grab it from his network, and off we go. I did have something similar set up in my old SHO, but it wasn't quite as advanced. I could dl the data logs, and swap musi from my shop/home network.
  16. Thanks for the link guys, I'll be trying it out tomorrow. I did find out that it was Windows that craped out, and not Grub. It was getting passed the bootloader and going to a black screen. I did an MBR out of curiosity, and it would get to where it would start to load Win, and go to a BSOD. I did a full repair install, and it still went BSOD before the load screen. Did a complete reinstall and it works fine now. But now I need to reload Grub so we can boot the Linux partition.
  17. So, here's my issue... I have a '93 Taurus SHO I'll be picking up shortly after January 1st. It's a complete toy, since I already have a daily driver. I'm using an older laptop in the car as a carputer solution, running to a 7" touchscreen. I was thinking that I want to not only have the GPS and MP3 streaming(and maybe some wardriving.....), but I want to integrate the system into the car's security. Basically, I need a way for it to control a 12v relay for the starting system. I can build the passcode interface if I can figure out how to get it to talk to a security system relay of some type. I know there are things out there, but I'm not sure what. It would have to be USB. That, and I could integrate the wireless card with a small app that would allow me to remote start it over my home network, and even time it to warm it up in the morning before work if I choose to take that car. Maybe even get it to talk to the security/keyless system as well from the network? If that works, I can set up a secondary connection ad-hoc to my other laptop that I always have with me for controlling it as well. Just a thought I've been playing with. I would like to integrate some more features but I'll get this done and go from there. I'm not much of an amateur electronics guy, so forgive me if this is a n00b question. Forgot to add, this will also control TWeecER, the tuning device on the engine.
  18. So, we had Sabayon running on a dual boot with Win 2k on a spare system, and for some reason now it won't boot into windows. It has a rootnoverify, and just halts. Sabayon still runs great. Can anyone help me figure this out? Thanks!
  19. Both of the systems we will be using are hardwired to their individual nets, so I think the idea of running a wifi card in each and bridging the 2 is probably our best bet. Now, the question is, what would be better.. Ad-hoc the 2 systems, or tie the wifi cards for each system into the other networks routers?
  20. We do that now. Either that, or we can swtch the network our laptops connect to and do that. We were just looking for a way to make it a bit easier. This way if one of us is gone, we don't have to go over and boot up the other ones machine and what not. The file servers are on all the time.
  21. I know I could do it with changing it into a briige, bt I'm on contract for my internet, and f I remember right he is to. I think I may try something like what Sparda mentioned and set up another system with a wireless card. That, or maybe set a computer up on each system(we have about 15 systems or more between the 2 of us, this isn't a problem). Maybe have each one connected to the network on each houe, and do an ad-hoc over the wifi cards?
  22. That's kinda what I was thinking Vak. We have 2 routers, my Blitzz and his Linksys. But I wsa under the assumption that on a client bridge, one router acts as an AP. That would eliminate one of the internet connections completely.
  23. It would, but there is no way to get wire across to him. He lives across the road from me. We get solid WiFi signal between us, 70+% from each router even at the back of the houses.
  24. HL2 is up there. Myst(any of the series) is as well. Starcraft and UT are also right up top. Current most played is COD4 though.
