I am in a similar situation, and just wrote a program that encrypts/decrypts text files using the Vigenere Cipher ( http://www.hak5.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=16586 ). Why not write a program that cracks my cipher?

I don't think grounding a USB port would cause the system to power off, nor do I find it likely that the USB drive was running code, due to Windows' 7 default setting is not to run code from removable media, though he may have changed that setting, in which case all you need a .bat file that calls "shutdown /s /t 00" Sounds like a hoax to me, but we need more information about the drive before we could tell you with any amount of certainty what the device may have been doing. I personally hate the official Python IDLE, and tend to use Notepad++ or gEdit for small projects and SPE for larger projects. What do you guys think of IDLE, and what do you like to use?

A far more effective method for breaking into FTP accounts, then bruteforce, is to call the owner of the machine on a telephone and ask for their username and password. ( I'm not joking, that is actually more effective )

It will only auto run on Windows XP. Vista/Seven do not execute programs from optical media automatically. You are however touching on the advantages of a U3 drive, the computer will see it as a normal disc, which is read only, but it also has a normal flash partition which is read/write and you can use the CDFS partition to run programs on the normal flash partition (that way the program(s) can create directories if need be, but maintain their 'run via optical media' advantages).

I've been recently playing around with Python, and finally got around to writing something (somewhat) useful. Basically it allows you to easily edit the hosts file with just a few commands. You can display the contents of the hosts file, add/remove entries, and reset the entire file. It also supports grouping so you can create multiple entries at the same time, here are some examples. It will even resolve URLs for you. I learn best by example, so I'm going to post the source as well, in hopes that it may serve as example code for others learning Python. It appears there is a bit of java script that Newegg uses to upgrade users to HTTPS, even when SSL Strip removes the HTTPS links from the site. Go ahead and try it. Hopefully more sites will follow Newegg's example of actually having decent security. :-P

Yeah i just shorten the name from 'commando' to 'cmdo' (note the payload binds cmd.exe) some of the time. However I haven't done much work on it for a while, but do have an updated version in the works, no eta on that.
