I would image that iptables is probably blocking that port going outbound from your vps. Try disabling iptables and see what happens.

new network, possibly new firewall too. Be sure the port isn't blocked going out as well as in. I'm no expert, but try port 443 as a test to see if it works. If it does, then you know something is blocking port 2222
