  1. Well from what I've read so far, if it identifies as a CDROM device it's NOT writable, telling it that it's a HDD is hit and miss from my experience with fixed-disk autorun... So how about partitioning it? Partition however much we need for switchblade and define it as a CDROM device then have the remaining as a flash USB UMS device... I don't know if this would screw with the device identification though, I'm not sure if it needs to be a physical device or if it can be a logical partition that you trick Windows in to thinking is a CDROM...
  2. Yeah, it might kinda miss the point of it being automatic though ;) Oh, and DLSS: I see what you mean now, a Hak5 icon... sure!
  3. Unconfirmed but may be of use. Edit: Thanks for linkage Darren :)
  4. Nah I'm working on a few things right now and don't really have time to upload right now but I will have it up asap... Sure, you can put a Hak5 logo in there but you won't see it, the whole thing's invisible ;)
  5. I'm currently screwing with my MP3 playing in WinHex... I don't have a USB stick but I'm guessing it works the same way, I hope it doesn't brick... Will report back as soon as I work it out :)
  6. I don't remember which ones can do it but I have come across hex editors that can mess with the raw data on a volume... I'll have to do some digging later and see what I can find, this sounds like an interesting method.
  7. It's currently not as yet, I've got a lot on atm (teaches me to try and stretch myself, eh?), it'll hopefully be up tonight (tonight GMT) along with the binaries again :)
  8. We're sorry but you can only use this DVD player in 2 rooms per house. Please return this DVD player to the original room! Please return this player to the ground floor to play this movie. This player will be automatically locked after 3 attempts to play content while it is not positioned on the ground floor. The manufacturer has been notified.
  9. Raise your hand if you a) tried to read that and b) managed to read and fully understand it...
  10. Wise advice there, those plastic clad monsters don't really tickle my fancy (and are easier to break)... They often cost more too...
  11. I don't know if RAID is all that useful for most people y'know...
  12. Very nice! Now, I need a MiniDV cam, some tapes and... *goes shopping*
  13. Well besides reliability (which according to that page isn't actually that bad) I'd imagine seek times would be horrific...
  14. Yeah PSU's very important and if you're going for $2000 worth of machine I'd say at the least to get a 500W PSU but make sure it's a good one...
  15. Well I just did a bit of research and apparently it varies but I've heard figures around about 2.7GB on a 160 minute tape: http://www.stuartcheshire.org/rants/VideoBackup.html
  16. Actually I may be wrong here but I think it does compare to a brick in terms of weight, it is fairly weighty...
  17. I seem to remember there being products to back up to VHS tape too but I don't really remember much about them...
  18. Under $2000? Get the best you can afford, $2000 is a fairly big budget considering most of the people who frequent these forums and I think most would agree; just get the best you can afford :)
  19. I completely agree VaKo, I did have a fairly long reply here, but while helping someone I copied the text, re-used the browser window by accident and managed to overwrite the clipboard so I'll stick with "I agree" for now...
  20. I quite agree, I don't wanna sound like a mental, computer-obsessed, privacy freak ready to obliterate anyone saying "if you're all legit there's no problem" but it's time we took action... We NEED to stop (or at least slow down) this process before all of the new equipment we buy can is full of back-doors, remote control functions, ways to tell if we're "being naughty" and general crap that tells us what we can and can't do with few if no ways around it...
  21. holy shnitzel! yeah that might come in useful, thanks a lot!
  22. Hmm... been doing some thinking, the project will be back online and firing on all cylinders... the source will be around but I'll make it a little more difficult (but by no means impossible) to find... I'll put the links up again in the next couple of days and I'll even try to get another version ready for when I do ^_^
