DAC, Considering you are using OS X , what version? Apple has a fancy way of doing things and is forcing the 192.168.1.X subnet rather than the 172.16.42.X for sharing ( assuming this is what you are trying to do) What is the contents of /etc/bootpd.plist and /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.nat.plist?
