  3. ok, yay isnt this just fun???? I got a comp from a family member today and since its better than my 233mhz(P3 450 mhz, much more featured MBoard) i want to use it. BUT! in order for smoothwall to work properly, it needs to be re installed on this new HDD, yet, the BIOS is locked out with a password! what do i do? plug in my windows disk and download a BIOS flash program from Award's website? or is there a way of recovering the password and/ or removing it so i can access the BIOS? Please help! Im comfterable working with the BIOS but I havent encountered this situation b4, so i have no clue what to do. P.S. It was previously a french school computer and it has an Award Bios chip in it.

  6. Hello!, If you have read my other posts in the "Hacks, Mods & Coding" section about creating a home firewall with linux for home use(one client PC, the only other computer in the house). you know what im going for. anyway, I wanted to experiment with the different linux distros but only have 2 6gb HDDs, I was planning to put SmoothWall and m0n0wall on one disk just as a test of which would suit my needs best, and the other having ubuntu 6.10 installed on it, how would I go about partitioning my disks to have each installation in a different area and will I be able to select what i want to run each boot( I just want to try the 2 firewalls and decide on one and then delete teh other one.) your help would be most appreciated. thnx, Super Pollos
  7. thnx Vako, ill try smoothwall, and since i have another HDD to play with maybe ill put ubuntu 6.1 on it and learn more about linux.
  8. Ive heard about Ubuntu and its variants, i tried downloading that distro. but didn have time to and VM 2004 wont work on Xp home. Also, as a sidenote, i dont exactly want to haxor my schools network as the admin knows me and is my Computer science teacher next semester (Im Canadian) although i have scanned the NW on several occasions( just curious as to what ports are open, and wow there are a lot(even NetBios, eeep) I haven't done any thing malicious or blatantly violate the ToS and arouse suspicion.
  9. Ok, Ill be blunt, im a n00b, I freely admit it and want to gain knowledge(if you all dont flame me b4 you even read teh rest). I'm thinking of taking my old computer(Pentium ~233 w/MMX, 256mb PC133 RAM, 2 D-link 530 TX REV C NIC's, 2 6gb seagate PATA HDD's) Ive read about using an old comp as a firewall/proxy by installing a linux distro.( Plz dotn flame me, ive never used linux b4, as i only have really any experience on a windows only environment) What would be the best linux distro for a beginner and for a firewall? and dont tell me to look on google, ive tried that and teh usefull pages go way over my head as they expect previous knowlegde on linux. if you have any suggestions on the questions above please dont hesitate to tell me, and if you happen to find a good "Linux for N00bs" per say, website, inculde that too. Thnx for your time, Super_Pollos
