  1. For years I've complained about EFI and how I have no control over it like I do an engine with a carburetor. Well, that time is going to come to an end. I just ordered a USB OBD II cable and I need to find some free software that'll let me hack into the cars ECM to adjust things like timing, idle rpms, fuel/air ratios, ect.

Does anyone have a good and free program that they use to tweak their cars ECM and if so can you share a link for it. I'm running Kali Linux which is Debian based so I need something that'll work with Debian. Thanks.

    P.S.

I did find Scantool in Synaptic which will let me read and reset codes via OBD II and I've installed it but for the life of me I can't find it in my Applications list. So where in heck was it installed at??? I also installed OpenOBD as a .deb file and installed it but nothing shows up under Applications for it either. So how do I access these OBD II scanners??

    P.S.S.

    Would Scantool run under Arduino???

  2. Ok, did ANOTHER clean install and this time when it got near the end and went out on the interweb to pull packages I didn't have to change download mirrors so it was a good install. apt-get update brought no errors. Installed a package(gnome tweak tool) and it went in right with no problems and even after a dist-upgrade things still work. I guess whatever Repo problems Kali was having have been fixed or I just got lucky. Either way it's in and running on my #1. Now I need to do a clean install on my #2 and on Jr. just so all laptops will be on the same page. This should be fun.

  3. I know they are shifting people to mirrors now, I just noticed that due to proxy auth errors in one of my systems. Perhaps some of the mirrors are not complete yet.

This could be because on the last couple installs I've had to change mirrors to get my install from the interweb. May just give it a week then try a fresh install to see if things are cleared up OR if I could figure out how to install Gqrx in say a Debian 7 Distro then I'd not have to worry about Kali since I'm only using it for it's SDR support.
  4. Yep, posted on the Kali Google Plus page last night and I've look up this "problem" on the interweb and others are having Public Key errors too. It's like they're Repos are either down or they've issued a new Public Key but not bothered to clue us in on it. Almost got the Debian Testing Repos all installed so I'll be a bit more "cutting edge" with my Kali install.

  5. In an effort to have working Repos so I can download packages I've added Debian Testing to the standard Kali Repos. That way I can get what I can from the Kali Repos that work and get the rest from a Debian Repo.

    ## Regular repositories
deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali main non-free contrib
    deb http://security.kali.org/kali-security kali/updates main contrib non-free
    ## Source repositories
    deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali kali main non-free contrib
    deb-src http://security.kali.org/kali-security kali/updates main contrib non-free

    ##Debian
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
    deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free

    deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib non-free
    deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib non-free

    deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
    deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free

Just be aware that if you add Debian Testing to your sources.list it'll take a couple hours or more to upgrade all the packages depending on your computer and interweb connection.

  6. Again, clean install, apt-get update and errors. Even more after doing an apt-get dist-upgrade then another apt-get update. Kali Repos are broken, they need to look into issuing new GPG keys for their Repos and getting the Repos up and running like they're suppose to be. This is very frustrating to say the least.

  7. Went back to all Kali Repos and did a "sudo apt-get clean" to clean up everything and I still get this error:

W: GPG error: http://http.kali.org kali Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG ED444FF07D8D0BF6 Kali Linux Repository <devel@kali.org>

I would like to know why I'm getting this error, is anyone else getting it? How can I or what do I do to fix it?

  8. Funny thing is that WOW Country, 102.5 FM is spot on the money but NOAA Weather, which is suppose to be 162.400.000MHz narrow FM is off a bit. Still, with the Waterfall and wave form you can tweak in the signal until you get a clean, clear audio broadcast. I find that Gqrx is one of the easiest programs to set up and use. I looked at Quisk and not only didn't it work but I really couldn't understand how to set it up to get it to work.

  9. GPG errors likely mean you need to download the keys for the repo before you can pull from them. The apt-add-repository command does this automatically. Otherwise, google for the process for adding new repos including downloading the gpg keys from the keyserver.

When I did a "sudo add-apt-repository" command I got a no argument error. Also, why would a brand spankin' new install with bone stock Repos give errors if there wasn't something wrong with the Repos? I think the Kali Repos are messed up or off line. Not having any trouble with the Debian Repos.

  10. Well, pulled out the Kali Repos

deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali main non-free contrib

    deb http://security.kali.org/kali-security kali/updates main contrib non-free

    deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali kali main non-free contrib

    deb-src http://security.kali.org/kali-security kali/updates main contrib non-free

And just left the Debian ones

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free

    deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free

    deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ wheezy-updates main contrib non-free

    deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ wheezy-updates main contrib non-free

    deb http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main contrib non-free

    deb-src http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main contrib non-free

and the "problem" went away. I know this error has something to do with the Kali Repos, they're either down or something screwy is going on with them.

  11. I still want to know what in heck this means??

W: GPG error: http://http.kali.org kali Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG ED444FF07D8D0BF6 Kali Linux Repository <devel@kali.org>

Is something on Kali's end "broken" or do I need to try and get a new Public Key for something or what?

  12. Too bad there wasn't a way to get the broadcast freq. of aircraft from Flightradar24 so I could tune into it with Gqrx and listen as they pass over head. I see a lot of aircraft passing over my area, guess we're in a flight path from FL to Chicago or something and I've heard a few while surfing Gqrx but it'd be cool to be able to put the two together to take the guess work out of hearing the aircraft that I see on Flightradar24.

  13. Well, here's the Repos I'm going with.

deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali main non-free contrib

    deb http://security.kali.org/kali-security kali/updates main contrib non-free

    deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali kali main non-free contrib

    deb-src http://security.kali.org/kali-security kali/updates main contrib non-free

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free

    deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free

    deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ wheezy-updates main contrib non-free

    deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ wheezy-updates main contrib non-free

    deb http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main contrib non-free

    deb-src http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main contrib non-free

You almost have to add the Debian Repos to Kali since the Kali Repos are down so much you'd never get ANY updates or be able to install anything from them. LOL

  15. Ok, so I think it's obvious that Kali is having some issues with it's Repos so I added the Debian ones to my sources.list as well for back up so my sources.lists look like this:

    Kali:

deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali main non-free contrib

    deb http://security.kali.org/kali-security kali/updates main contrib non-free

    deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali kali main non-free contrib

    deb-src http://security.kali.org/kali-security kali/updates main contrib non-free

    Debian:

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free

    deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free

    deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ wheezy-updates main contrib non-free

    deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ wheezy-updates main contrib non-free

    deb http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main contrib non-free

    deb-src http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main contrib non-free

  16. I think it may be a Kali Repo problem. I just did a clean install and I'm getting the same errors so it's not from the soruces.list since it's bone stock right now. Wonder if one of their Repos is down? I can't install 99% of the packages that I normally use like gnome-tweak-tool, clementine, synaptic, ect. Guess I need to wait and see if the Repos get back up or what?

  17. You have to add the keys for the servers when you modify the repo list like this. The easiest was is to use apt-add-repository to add them. It is part of the python-software-properties package.

Ahh, ok, I'll give that a try. It's almost like when you add a PPA in Ubuntu then before you can add a package. Let me see if that'll fix it. "sudo apt-add-repository" Thanks

Ok, I need an argument to add them, go figure, LOL

The odd thing is that I am using the same Repo list in my #1 and in Jr. and #1 doesn't give me any errors at all but Jr. still does. Wonder if I should try the Repo list in my #2 to see what happens. Think I'll give that a shot.

  18. Quick Up Date. I removed the "Bleeding Edge" and TLP Repos and added what was left to another laptop that I have and did a sudo apt-get update and got zero errors so it was probably in the TLP Public Key. I'll try this on Jr(my nc4400 laptop) and see if it'll fix him or not.

  19. In a similar vein to my Debian Repos in Kali question I've removed all the "Debian" Repos and went with a set of Kali Repos.

deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali main non-free contrib

    deb http://security.kali.org/kali-security kali/updates main contrib non-free

    deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali kali main non-free contrib

    deb-src http://security.kali.org/kali-security kali/updates main contrib non-free

    deb http://repo.kali.org/kali kali-bleeding-edge main

    #deb-src http://repo.kali.org/kali kali-bleeding-edge main

    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/linrunner/tlp/ubuntu lucid main

But I'm getting an error at "sudo apt-get update"

W: GPG error: http://http.kali.org kali Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG ED444FF07D8D0BF6 Kali Linux Repository <devel@kali.org>

And wonder what I can do to get the proper signatures so I won't get the invalid error. Thanks

  20. NOAA Weather Radio is Narrow FM and for me it's 162.393.000MHz for a clear signal. They SAY that they broadcast at 162.400.000MHz but for some reason they're off just a touch.

You'd have to look up or call your local volunteer FD to see what Freq. they're using then turn to it.

You can crank the gain all the way up to 50 IIRC and adjust the SQL until you pick stuff up. Antennas are everything. The power antenna that I can now use because of the F to Coax converter cable gives me an extra 3db of gain for Wide FM although it's not as good as the stock antenna with the rigged speaker wire antenna for AM 27MHz CB stuff. If you have an antenna on your house for TV you could try hooking the dongle to it with the F to Coax adapter and I'd bet you'd bring in a pretty good signal. Again, check out my pics and see how I have things set up then tweak stuff from there. Talk to ya' later Brother. :D

  21. I've been rockin' HP/Compaq Business Class laptops for the last year. My current bunch are two, HP/Compaq nc6400's with Core Duo(32bit) 1.83GHz processors, 2GB of DDR2-533MHz RAM and 14.1" screens and a HP/Compaq nc4400, Core 2 Duo(64bit) 2.0GHz processor, 2GB's of DDR2-667MHz RAM and 12.1" screen. All three are running Kali Linux 1.0.6 and all three run stable and fast(IMHO) with no problems.

As long as you're running a good Linux Distro you don't need all the processor power in the world or a boat load of RAM. Now if you're going with Windows 7 then you'll need more power and more RAM since Windows is a resource hog In my opinion but with Linux any decent dual core with 2- GB's of RAM will do well enough. Also, you can normally pick up a good condition, used HP Business class laptop for $50-$100 depending on what it is on EBay which leaves plenty of money left for any upgrades you want to do like more RAM or an SSD, extra batteries, new A/C adapter, carrying case, ect. As always, this is JMHO, YMMV.

  22. Been running Kali Linux 1.0.6 for about 3 weeks now and it's working out great for a Daily use Distro. Main thing folks need to do to run it is on first boot add a user with Admin status and run it like you want any other Distro from that point on, not as root. That way it's secure as any other Debian based Distro since you have to use sudo to do stuff in your user account. Also, I love having Gqrx already installed with GNU Radio so I don't have to fool with installing it in another Distro where I always and I mean always run into dependency issues. I'm really lovin' Kali, I think I've found my "go to" Distro that I can use from here on out. Anyway, just wanted to share in case anyone was apprehensive about running Kali as an everyday Distro, don't be, it works like any other Debian based Distro, just make sure NOT to run as root and set up an Admin account to run it from and you'll be fine.

  23. Did you try the Gqrx program in Kali? Applications/Kali Linux/Wireless Attacks/Software Defined Radio/gqrx. Open it with the dongle in place and it should auto detect then hit "ok" and it'll open the program. Set it up like I have in my pics above and dial it into a known strong local station to test it out. If you can get it on your radio you should be able to get it on your SDR dongle.
