  1. I'm working on setting up something very similar for one of our clients, for exactly the same reason. Smoothwall, once you implement it, will of course allow you to do this. I ended up using Zentyal for our client. Configuration was straightforward, I threw in an extra NIC and bridged them for throughput, then set up a transparent proxy so I wouldn't have to do any individual configuration. I'm actually waiting to implement it until they have the final release of 3.0 (out on Sept. 13th) as it will be based on Ubuntu 12.04 instead of 10.04, and looks to clear up some of the web-based management lag. Might be worth checking out.
  2. Interesting idea, but probably not viable over the long run due to it being an open system. Yes, you can get fresh water just by flushing, and instantly cool everything down; but having it open like that can introduce solid matter (ie, the stuff growing in the toilet in the picture there) and possibly clog it. Did a fun one in college with my minifridge; I figured I was running the fridge anyway, why not get a little more use out of it?
  3. Did some R&D on this for the company last year. 3CX is very easy to install and configure. Also had a working installation of trixbox (Linux-based. Nice thing here, with a hybrid system, is the ability to bypass having a SIP if you have an actual phone line. The phone line also provides a fail-over if your SIP goes out of whack, although it severely reduces call-volume/quality. Ultimately we discontinued using it as the community edition fork of trixbox has essentially died while the company pursues the commercial avenue. Messed around with PBXIAF, liked it quite a bit, but the project was ultimately deemed unnecessary, so I haven't pursued it much since then.
