I have a similar problem.
I used Windows 7 and followed instructions exactly but address "http://172.16.42.1/pineapple" failed to load in browser.
Then I opened a command prompt to ping 172.16.42.42 and 172.16.42.1
This is what I got:

I performed in on 3 different computers and all cables were fault free.
I also used Ubuntu and followed instructions for Ubuntu exactly. 172.16.42.1 also seemed to be unreachable.
ANYONE HAS ANY ADVICE?
