Tor is good but slow. My vote goes to vpn too (preferably one not based in the US because I believe they have to keep usage logs).

There are a few apps like VPNetMon which will stop you using your real ip if the VPN drops for any reason.

Fun article to read, but since it's Fox News it probably has more than a few inaccuracies. I did spot 1 or 2 (like Microsoft saying it took 10,000 man days labour) but no doubt there are more.
