  1. I don't wanna hear your Windows bashing... I use Windows, it works... sure, so does Linux but if I (or anyone else, such as Mr Andrewson) want to use Windows then so be it. Thank you and good night. So be it yes. I have several problems with windows/Microsoft , biggest problem is that Microsoft cant be the leader by using normal and legal trade practices ,and they wont share with anyone only steal from everyone they want to then can fight a legal battle until the other person is out of money and they win by default. im not getting into that but im sorry people will not hate me for bashing windows lots of people dont like it. Also i am only new to this particular forum not to the tech scene so dont say cause im new i dont know anything JcPLinux
  2. ./configure make make install if there is a file called configure run it make it install it its easy , and compiling source is fun , make sure you have all the dependencies are settled and have at it Peace out JcPlInux
  3. Ok dude that isnt that low spec of a rig , its outdated yes but you can run most versions of linux on that fairly fast with a GUI just shop around a bit a pick one out , my home server is only 350mhz 440bx with a 256mb ram chip , however i cant find a bios flash to handle more than 128mb of ram anyways you can still have a very useful pc with that just learn to love the PC its your friend it listens to you do what you want with it if it runs put linux on it if you search hard enough they may even have a distro designed for exactly this damn small linux is only 50mb and has a nice repository so you can get more but it runs great on low end machines my 440bx 350 runs suse 9.3 no problen
  4. You all are wrong the best thing to do is skip reinstalling windows it blows donkey dick and just take a month or so too decide which linux distro you like the best , i dual boot my laptop with windows and xp just because my classes at ITT tech have system requirments and windows is one of those requirments linux only takes a few days to get when you find the distro you like and if your like me once you get used to lionux then something comes up where you ned to dual boot you will see why windows sux , i didnt know how much it did until i reinstalled and rebooted it at leaset 10 times of course its nice to be able to use some of the dlls for wine in linux since i can read my windows partition in linux , anyways on topic switch too linux most of the stuff you want can be found for linux unless you play alot of games in which case look into crossover office or cedega they are both good , you dont have to reboot linux to modify the kernel if it locks up hit crtl+alt+backspace and log into the GUI again no long reboots , and i havent even turned off my linux computers in 1 month i have had power failures or other things but no OS hard crashes soft crashes are easier to recover from in linux , just read up use vmware for a little while if that makes you more comfortable but windows is so much less powerful than Linux
  5. Dude vmware has such easy settings are you running vmware under windows? Vmware actually creates files if memory serves , you tell it how big you want the virtual drive to be and it make it into a folder that folder should be recognized as an HDD by vmware and run it like its a hard drive it even asks you these things when you run vmware are you sure you got workstation and not just the player? well anyways vmware is totally virtual so it doesnt actually partition your drive it makes a virtual one , if your really worried about it go ahead and dual boot with opensuse 10.1 i had no issues except you need to reinstall windows first and partition the drive in half or however you want to so that you have an unused partition to install linux on and linux will read the windows/c partiton and let you keep it and create a linux partition in the free space Vmware is fun i will admit but i still like dual booting. Hope this will shed some light on your problem Ps. Redhat linux , Opensuse , and Gentoo are my favorites , slack is a bit difficult for the noob i had trouble getting it correctly installed and ive been using linux since i was 12 just never that package management system Peace out JcPlinux
  6. I personally would buy more memory for it if it can in fact handle more than 32mb. And use your imagination pick a job you dont have a computer doing yet and make that its job , you shouldnt try running windows on any computer it sux but on an old one forget about it , i use suse linux 10.1 but unless you already have swap space partitioned you need a minimum of 256mb of ram , i would have to agree that DSL is your best bet , but that runs slow on my xbox and the xbox is a celeron 733 mhz with 64mb of ram. I suggest not using a GUI and it should run nicely if you can handle no GUI. Spend a little get some memory but if it runs for god sakes keep it , cant get rid of a working computer just change its funtion in the system. I still have a p2 350 with 128mb ram runs suse 9.3 that is my home server i have had for 8 years or so call it SCRAPS because its been rebuilt out of so many different parts only the mobo/CPU are the same. sorry for the long post hope you get something out of it JcpLinux
