  1. Cool! I would like to do the same thing for the airlink101 printer server box in addition to a jet direct.
  2. I have been Microsoft free for over five years and I used to manage windoze computers for a living and still have licensing up to XP and win2ks3. Libre Office is replacing Openoffice. We do not use HW, unless it can run some kind of 'nix. Finding freebasic was the last hurdle for me, since I had written a bit of code in qbasic.
  3. If you are good at C++, you may love Mono on Unbuntu. Python is also big on Ubuntu. Lots of good free books out there. Too many potential legal hassels with qt and Mono for me.
  4. I really would like to try this. Just have to compile a c socket client for a router running a third party firmware with a web page to point to it...... http://blog.rhysgoodwin.com/hardware/print-server-power-control-hack/
  5. Might want to consider letting LibreOffice (fork of open office) be an option.People can use it at home for free. If they use it at home they are more likely to use it and learn on their own.
  6. You might want to check out centos. http://windowsservergrouppolicy.net/products/likewise_enterprise/red-hat-group-policy.php
  7. I was thinking of a combination of a dc powered pogoplug and a chumby for a car computer combo.
  8. All I have now are either intel or amd 32 bit machines excepting arm based units such as the router and nslu2. The nslu2 will run debian.
  9. The first computer I used and the first computer I owned are two different things. The first computer I used was an IBM360 Model 40 that I wrote Fortran programs at school for a class at college. The next computer was a TRS-80 model 1 that I kind of hijacked from my brother. I wrote a program to do the 1040a short form back in the early 1980's. I had a VIC 20 for a short while but never really used it. Then I bought a Commodore 64 and that to me was my first real computer. programmed the heck out of and played so many games. In fact, I also used to it to generate tests for classes I was teaching at a local college. The college had some software for me to do that. That system is now long since gone, but I will always treasure that system, though I would not go back unless I had to.
  10. Under thirty dollars for a Killawatt several years back before they sold locally.
  11. Update: Downloaded the firmware image that loads from usb and I am running a web browser on the 8 inch insignia infocast aka chumby. it is just a plug and run deal with nothing to install. Now to build a server that is made especially serve out pages for it. What someone else did:
  12. I want to use it as a home automation interface and for displaying various pages from our private web server.
  13. The Insignia Infocast was on sale at best buy for $67 dollars, so I could not pass it up for a new toy. http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/20/insignias-infocast-gains-a-web-browser-a-little-dignity-in-the/
  14. Most people are not as learned as you are. I do not seem to get the tinny sound though.
  15. If this is done in the middle of the night, Just see whose light is on at that time of night and point the antenna towards it. One thing you have to consider is if that particular system was hacked remotely, then things get even more interesting.Worst case scenario is to file a complaint with the FCC. They have the equipment to find them.
  16. Careful, the amp might blow out your sound card. I would go from the guitar directly into the sound card with a set up possibly like this: http://www.instructables.com/id/Yet-another-amplified-acoustical-guitar/. I use audacity to capture the sound. You can make a preamp if you need to. An old tape recorder is good for that. Or for a couple of dollars in parts you can build one.
  17. laptop + usb wifi adapter + usb extension cable + plastic salad bowl (from the dollar store) covered in foil with a tight hole for the usb wifi adapter (sort of directional antenna). I will let you figure out the rest.
  18. Set up a honeypot with a fake highly secret government web site with all kinds of stuff to keep him busy for a while. Make a directional wifi antenna lock in on the offender. Even better, Find a friend with a plain black car, dress up in black suits, and go to the offending abode with your directional antenna and laptops to scare the crap out of them. If nothing else, it will make people aware something fishy is going on there.
  19. I wish. I believe that time heals all wounds and time wounds all heels.
  20. Good news: http://www.newsweek.com/2010/12/15/will-the-supreme-court-overturn-health-care-reform.html
  21. Where I "used to" work, the MS IT mgmt were paranoid as sin. If you knew linux and were good at it, you were silent branded as a hacker and marked for termination.
  22. "Anyone or anything can be touched." an old sicilian saying. Having the source code does not mean much unless you compile it yourself. Drm is allegedly now in ubuntu, which is just as bad.
  23. It was not exactly that crude. Was lucky enough to be successful.
