  1. Also check out newegg or other places for cheap refurbs. With that budget, you're gonna have to get a netbook, most likely.
  2. This one got me thinking.....I've heard of the name "The IT Crowd" but never gave it much thought. So I checked out a wikipedia article on it and it sounds awesome! Any good sources for episodes? (does BBC America show it? Hulu redirected me to IFC's website, but it looks like they only have season 4. Guess I could always try proxying myself to a UK server and try to watch it off the BBC's website, but that's usually pretty sloooooooow)
  3. Mentioned this in another thread.....if it doesn't, buy a cheap $30 USB wireless adapter that does. I use a D-Link Wireless G (WUA-1340) for just this purpose with my HP Mini, whose internal wireless card doesn't have a monitor mode driver yet reverse-engineered for it. Here's a slightly old list of wireless cards (internal and external) with what chipset they have and how well they do monitor mode, packet injection, etc. The real nice thing about having the second wireless card for kismet, aircrack-ng, etc. is that you can still connect to the internet with the first one while you're sniffing packets with the other! B)
  4. While we're on the subject of netcat... ...anyone know why the openBSD version (as I said above, now also the standard version packaged with Ubuntu) dropped the "-e" option?
  5. Are you trying port 455 (the one that tutorial you posted used as an example) or some other port? My first instinct is that the Win firewall is blocking any unused port by default. So you could either try to get your netcat backdoor to work over an allowed port (like 80, 8080, 443, etc.) or put a rule into the firewall to explicitly allow incoming/outgoing traffic on the port of your choice. I have the openBSD version of netcat (which is now the default version that Ubuntu comes with) and it won't let you use any of the first 1024 ports without root access. Not sure if the Win version is the same or not.
  6. At least in the Midwest, seems like there are a ton of temp contract and contract-to-hire jobs out there. I was about to be laid off and luckily found a new permanent job before I was set to be cut loose, but I still get at least five emails a week from different staffing agents that find me on Dice or CareerBuilder with contract opportunities.
  7. +1 to CLI with a touchpad keyboard being a pain in the ass. Love having a terminal emulator on the iPhone and Android...hate typing on it though
  8. You're a dangerous criminal and must be stopped! Forget terrorists, the Mafia, and the Russian mob, clearly not paying for music downloads is the greatest threat to the EU right now.
  9. A fourteen-nation effort!? Yes, the menace of teenagers downloading free movies and porn must be stopped at all costs!!!!!
  10. Do I smell a home "capture the flag" lab in the making?
  11. Dammit! I was close, just didn't figure that spoiler part out
  12. Rather than software security, they need to teach some better user awareness. I, personally, have had my SSN and other protected personal information potentially compromised on several occasions because some jackass keeps leaving his DoD-issued work laptop in his car overnight to get stolen.
  13. Mythbusters FTW Also love documentaries and The Universe on the History Channel (though the rest of the History Channel lineup pisses me off...jeez, I remember when I used to complain that all they had on was WWII documentaries. Now it's nothing but Nostradamus, UFOs, and reality show drek. Looking forward to Fringe coming back on. It's like the good old days of the X-Files, but with more plausible characters. For example, how the hell could Scully still be doubting Mulder's paranormal theories after years of seeing aliens, liver-eating immortals, and humanoid fluke worms up close and personal!? After a few episodes, the Fringe crew basically just say "Ok" to whatever crazy shite Walter proposes to explain what's going on, lol. Right now, I'm lulzing like a mf'er at Louie on FX. Definitely one of the best comedians I've seen in a long time!
  14. I wonder if SCSI arrays are rated to withstand a 9mm
  15. Like they said above, you should be able to plugin a different USB dongle wireless adapter and use that for monitor mode/packet injection. Just make sure you find one with the right chipset that has drivers written for it. I don't have a Mac, but my HP laptop's builtin wireless card doesn't have a monitor mode/packet injection driver, so I use a USB-plugin D-Link Wireless G WUA-1340 for that. Kismet, aircrack-ng, and all the rest work just fine with it. Here's a (slightly dated but) good list of cards and whether BT has drivers available for them or not and should help you in shopping for one: http://backtrack.offensive-security.com/in...hp/HCL:Wireless
  16. No I didn't.........with how much junk currently fills our apartment, my friggin wife would murder me gangland-style if the UPS truck showed up with a palette full of old Dell kit
  17. One thing about the cover letter that I think helped me was showing my passion for IT security, my willingness and eagerness to learn new technologies, and (having previously been a consultant) talking up how I can become a subject matter expert in a new technology in a short period of time. Just remember who your audience is.....you have to get past the HR people (read: tech-illiterate) first before it will ever get to a hiring manager who might actually have a clue as to what the hell you'll be doing and what hardware/software/OS you're skilled in. HR people love seeing people who are passionate about their job, passionate about the company, and want to work there for the love of their professional (and don't just want a paycheck). Good luck in your search!
  18. At least in DoD land, there are many HP-UX, Slowlaris, and RHEL boxes............ .........but way outnumbered by WinServer200x and XP (most of DoD is just now migrating to Vista or 7, and it's a total goat-rope at the moment). :(
  19. Newegg is the shiz! Bought a new (not refurb) HP Mini from there several months back, plus a card of 2GB DDR2 RAM for it and a carrying sleeve. Total price.........less than if I'd bought just the exact same Mini from HP's website EVEN WITH the HP employee purchase "discount" price I was getting through my employer! I can't imagine getting to go through their warehouse. Like a candystore for hardware geeks!
  20. 1 LOT TO CONSIST OF 1994 PEDOBEAR VAN, SIX PASSENGER, BUILT-IN MATTRESS AND LEATHER RESTRAINTS, "FREE CANDY" SPRAY-PAINTED ON DRIVER SIDE, FSC/NSN: 2316; MANUFACTURER: DODGE; SERIAL NUMBER: 2B5WB35Z9NK170001; DOL ITEM CODE: 23606; DOL ITEM NUMBER THE CONDITION OF THE PROPERTY IS NOT WARRANTED.
  21. Nice haul! I've worked as a gov IT contractor before and I didn't even know about this site. Right now, I see one lot where you can get a whole damn Dell server room. Closes at 4:04 PM CST today and it's only at $29 right now!
