  1. I think that there are extremes like in everything else. under the right conditions everything fails under the right conditions everything can be hacked the thruth is that, if properly configured and with good hardware, it's very, very , very rare, to see a crash. I bet that no one will have a windows server running por 11 months without rebooting them even once and still be 100% operable and fast as day 1, and linux can, first hand, one of my servers. (and not soo good configured one hehe, because i'm very lazy sometimes) However i had crashes, mostly due to buggy drivers, heavy electro magnetic interference (because of one of my toys <GRIN>), or shitty hardware.

    ipods

I hate Ipods, and what they represent. All those idiots showing it like they are wearing some new fashion clothing, s#ckers. besides, it has no enough power, I used it once (from a friend) in a bus and I heard more the bus noise than the music itself. After all I tryied, the only thing that convinced me, it's the sony minidisc Hi-MD, the only one with enough quality and enough audio power (after a few software fixes :lol ). still the sonicstage software sucks too, but, you can't have it all, can you?. oh btw, forget to mention that it costs 1/3 of an average IPOD. seeya light
  3. Hi I have a CISCO 677 ADSL modem with my provider, had it for 6 years, never a problem, I moved to another appartment and now it doesn't link, never ever. I have a ARESCOM 800 that I programmed with the proper VPI/VCI and it works perfectly. Now the CISCO 677 does work in my older home and also works at work and at every place I could find with the same provider! WTH is going on?. The VPI/VCI are correct, I build the serial cable, figure out the password and enter in admin mode, when I check the logs I get this: 000:00:18:06 ATM Info Wan0 Failed train: Init - CRCRA1_ERROR 000:00:18:06 ATM Info WAN 0 physical layer is down 000:00:18:06 COMMANDER Info WAN 0 physical layer is down 000:00:18:15 ATM Info Wan0 5120 Kbps Down, 256 Kbps Up, 6 dB Margin 000:00:18:15 ATM Info Wan0 Up 000:00:18:21 ATM Info Wan0 Margin 6 dB, 6 dB previous 000:00:18:21 ATM Info Wan0 ATM HEC Error Failure 000:00:18:22 ATM Info WAN 0 physical layer is down 000:00:19:04 ATM Info Wan0 5120 Kbps Down, 256 Kbps Up, 6 dB Margin 000:00:19:04 ATM Info Wan0 Up 000:00:19:10 ATM Info Wan0 Margin 6 dB, 6 dB previous 000:00:19:10 ATM Info Wan0 ATM HEC Error Failure 000:00:19:11 ATM Info WAN 0 physical layer is down 000:00:19:11 COMMANDER Info WAN 0 physical layer is down 000:00:19:40 ATM Info Wan0 Failed train: Init - STATE_TIME_OUT_ERROR_RX 000:00:19:40 ATM Info WAN 0 physical layer is down I have no idea what the hell is an HEC Error Failure, I was googling for a couple of hours but all that ATM stuff is hell complicated, that's why I'm writing here, perhaps one of you know something about this and can give me a hint of what could be the problem. for the very few I understand, I think that is something related to exceded error ratio from the ATM signal, but not sure. I know i can buy another ARESCOM 800 and have it as backup, but, besides have 3 Cisco 677 at hand, I want to know WHY is this happening, is not longer a necessity of the hardware, is of knowledge hehe. well any help, comment or hint about this will be very appreciated. thanks lightman
  4. Hi cooper this is a EXCELLENT IDEA!. if you can provide the syncros in SRT / SUB format i can translate to spanish (I'm a native spanish speaker) still 1 hour episode is a huge work, i usually translate tv series like battlestar galactiba but do it in a team of 4 to 6 guys. it would be best if we can do it at least 2 ppl what the hosts think about this? wess, darren, alli, would you put the subtitles available with every episode? so people from other languages can watch the show too?. in short... count me in. :)
  5. RIAA and MPAA and all that shit is really starting to pissed me off. at the point that i stopped buying originals, i always download from the e2k a movie, if i like it, I go and buy it, looks fair 2 me, if it's bad, I won't. now I'm looking less than 1/4 of the movies i used to look and stopped buying dvd's and cd's, the only thing we can do (unless you are a lawer with money and time spare, which surely most dont) is stop buy material, i don't see another way. I don't buy protected discs anymore, if they are region 0 no problem. same with dvd's, if they are region free, i could buy them. if they go forward with this drm, we have 2 choices, do a nice workaround :) or stop using it. either way they loose (we only loose in one of them).
  6. well, how long you guys think?, let's talk about a realistic approach, if we can use 10.000 AMD64-3000 computers, how long would it take?. I Bet that most of us has access to at least 10 computers like this that are idle most of the time, so only need 1000 of us to do it. am I talking nonsense? if the app to preform this can be paralelized in a way that doesn't require too much bandwidth between process, perhaps we can really do it. another issue would be storage, how big do you thing something like this will be?. even if we don't make it in time and don't get the money, such a sucess would be something really amazing!.

  8. Spectacular!!!, as you said, worth watching. thanks for the info, it was very interesting light
  9. I had exactly the same idea, and get a 17" inch samsung lcd monitor and a used instanTV scan converter, (a small, modem like sized, tuner & S-Video to VGA converter) The quality isn't very good when it comes to DVD source, but it's quite Ok with normal TV viewing. Actually it looks very good on CRT monitors but not that good on LCD ones. It seems that the processing required to make it look good is not included in this old box. there are a lot HDTV -> XGA scanconverters out there in the 300 - 500 range, but I never tested them. I still think that is the best way to go, because for example here, a 20" LCD Sharp Aquos TV costs 1000 bucks and a 19" LCD monitor + small HDTV scann converter costs less than 600, that's a huge difference!!. not talking if you get a used scan converter or a used LCD monitor.
