  1. LogMeIn is free, works great!
  2. What are you trying to achieve by auditing W2k3? If you just want to see what users have what permissions to the folder, windows provides this already. Right click the folder > Security > Advanced > Effective Permissions.
  3. I used to use WSUS but It's a pain configuring the group polices to work on both XP and Vista in a mixed environment. Plus I didn't like the fact that it's 'pull' rather then 'push' management. I've been using GFI LanGaurd for 2 years now and I really like it. You can asses clients security (patches, open ports, miss configured polices) no matter the OS, and deploy patches via Push. You can also retract patches and sofware which is great for rollbacks. One other thing I like is you can also deploy non MS software, basically any .EXE. You can add custom switches to the installation allowing for silent installs are custom package configuration. http://www.gfi.com/lannetscan
  4. Boy, having AV on servers can be a tricky thing sometimes if those servers have services like Exchange or SharePoint running. If the AV isin't configured correctly to skip files that are in use, it can corrupt entire databases or installations in a flash! Wile I agree that for admin servers there should be little to no threat since we all know admin's never use servers to browse websites or check email : ), but in the real world I prefer to TNO (Trust No One) and have a good defense in depth strategy in place. That said, we've had great luck with Trend Micro Office Scan which offer real time scanning and scheduled scans, daily definition updates (sometimes multiple per day) and never has interfered with any critical services.
  5. Tapes are a good idea if your taking the data offsite frequently as they are less likely to be damaged in transit. The drawback being that a full restore from a tape will typically take longer than hard disc due to the linear fashion in which the data is stored (on the tape). Tape is cheap, easy to use and easy to transport IMHO.
