  1. So I have used linux for many years, very familiar with many aspects of its use and care, but I guess I have a long way yet to go.... I downloaded the AVG rescue cd (usb) which is based on a linux live cd. I found that the kernel had been compiled with broadcom wireless built-in and it would cause a hang on boot for the netbook I was trying to scan. I want to recompile the kernel but I am unsure of where to start. Now I have compiled many kernels and it is not that part that gives me pause, but AVG doesn't offer any insight into what they based their cd on. Should I just find the matching kernel version sources from kernel.org and use that? Am I looking at breaking lots of things? Maybe this is a simple problem and I'm just looking at it too hard.
  2. Another option you have if you are geographically challenged is sat internet (wild blue, hughesNet, etc). Now I do have some experience in the realm (worked for Dish Network (wild blue, kinda)) and I would offer these caveats... 1. If you have almost ANY other option, sat internet is not for you (because of the next reasons). 2. While sat internet is 'broadband', you will be latency challenged (speed of light is fast, but not that fast). Forget gaming. 3. The price is high, usually ~80usd/month, and sometimes they charge you for installation (and always things that are out of the ordinary such as pole mounts and cable bury). But when there is truly no other option, it may work for you.
  3. This is not 'exactly' the right place for this, but it relates to the avg rescue tool... I have found that they [avg] compiled their kernel with broadcom wireless support (not a module); this is causing a hang on boot. Any other laptop I would just pop out the card till I was done, but this is a netbook that would require it nearly be striped completely to get at. Any thoughts? Should I recompile the kernel? If so, what sources?
  4. I just wanted to make sure I have a clear picture... If client A is looking for an essid of 'myWifi', but myWifi had been using wpa, when Jasager says 'i'm myWifi' the client will ignore us since we dont have wpa like myWifi is supposed to? Thanks
  5. Maybe I'm just getting old, but.... what a waste of money. I spent about 1200 USD on my desktop two years ago and got nearly the same windows score, and it played crysis maxed as well. As long as you shop smart, and dont assume just cause its the most expensive it the best, you can put together an awesome gaming rig for a fraction of the cost. But to each his own I suppose....
  6. Many people (here and elsewhere) rant and rave about their love of the ALFA usb w-nics, but why? The rx/tx is nice, and it supports monitor and injection... but really, many cards can do this. I have also seen that most of the time, even when the alfa can see an AP and clients where another card can not, there usually is so much in the way of packet loss that it doesn't matter anyway. Also the alfa doesn't support master mode (real, not the airbase version), so that would seem a big loss of 'feature'. Thoughts?
  7. Verizon for the network (but they have high prices and mediocre CS at the best of times). I'm now on t-mobile ( awesome CS, but 3g coverage is.... ok? really only in cities). I will never do ATT. I'm on the Moto Cliq (poor choice), but I swear by my android phone now. Try and shy away from Moto based android phones if possible. If I could go back I would get either an HTC or defiantly the Nexus. JMO
  8. Another option that may (or may not) work for you is one of the broadcom based mini pci-e cards that also do bluetooth. My hp tx1000 series came with one (bcm4328 as i recall), and the bluetooth always worked great for me under all OS's.
